Former radio DJ dies after being tasered by police

A former radio DJ is dead after a confrontation with Minneapolis Police.

Officers were called to a domestic assault in north Minneapolis on the 1000 block of Knox Avenue N just after 12:45 a.m. Tuesday. A man reportedly was armed with a rifle.

Police had to use a taser to subdue the man when he fought with officers who were trying to arrest him in the street. Afterward, police noticed he appeared to be having a medical problem.

The suspect was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he died.

While the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office has only identified the victim as a 24-year-old man from Minneapolis, FM radio station KMOJ Radio has confirmed the suspect as former DJ Quincy Smith.

Smith, whose DJ name was 'Q the Blacksmith,' used to be on-air five times a week up until a year ago.

"We don't know what the cause of death was...[the taser] was not the only force option used against him," said Minneapolis Police Sgt. Bill Palmer.

The Minneapolis Police Homicide and Internal Affairs Units are investigating.

The five officers at the scene--Officers Carlos Baires-Escobar, Shawn Brandt, Timothy Devick, Christopher Humphrey, and Nicholas McCarthy--are on standard paid administrative leave during the investigations.
