Jordayna Barret's jaw is shattered. She had a bullet lodged in her left cheek bone and underwent successful surgery on Thursday to remove it.

30-year-old Keyon Timmons, a convicted murder, was out on parole. Now, he's back behind bars after witnesses say he shot his girlfriend's niece in the face.

"Soon as a I heard the gunshot, I cam running out of the house and I (saw) the feller running to his car. Got in, took off, slowed... and then the guy that was baby-sitting, her uncle, came out, threw a wrench through the vehicle and then he took off out of here real fast," said neighbor Joe Scally.

It happened Wednesday night at the Lake Villa mobile home park in Oxford Township. Police had been called there after Timmons allegedly threatened to shoot his girlfriend's mother. A sheriff's deputy arrived, but left with the mother when she got a call from her daughter that she had been in a car accident nearby.

Minutes later, police say Timmons showed up, walked up to the front door and started shooting into the mobile home. An uncle was inside with five children and Barret was hit.

Timmons was picked up a few miles away.

"It's heartbreaking. She's a sweet little girl and she just didn't deserve this. All she did was answer the door," said neighbor Scott Tribble.

"Cops were here 15 minutes prior to him shooting her for a domestic call and they left too soon, obviously," Scally said.

The handgun used in the shooting still has not been found.

Sheriff Michael Bouchard says Timmons was convicted of second-degree murder in 1995 and had been on parole since 2007. However, he had a larceny arrest in 2005 -- raising questions about why he was on the streets instead of behind bars.

"Our biggest concern is the victims. Anybody that walked in that hospital room and looked at the little five-year-old on a gurney would have to ask some pretty tough questions," Bouchard said.
