  • A necessary evil. Without it the war would have dragged on as Japan's honour would have driven them to continue the fight and force a ground invasion of the home Islands. This would have meant millions more deaths and many more years or war and occupation.

To all those idiots that think Hiroshima and Nagasaki are ghost towns like Pripyat you are mistaken. They are thriving cities with major manufacturing and commercial businesses.

    • @Aariss Russia hit Japans military very harshly during the same time. One of the largest invasions of the war... IMO the nukes were not the only reason for the surrender.

    • @Aariss Correct.

If you look at Hiroshima now, compare it to Detroit.

Kind of funny, Detroit is in shambles and Hiroshima is an amazing beautiful city.

I guess thats what happens when you have a nation that doesn't give out welfare as easily as USA does. They quickly rebuild from devastation. On the other hand, the welfare state of Detroit is in ruins.

    • @666Berserker It certainly expedited the surrender.

    • @URmomsOBGYN I hate to burst your deluded bubble, but japan received quite a bit of aid (welfare) after the war ended.

  • The bomb that saved far more lives than it ended

  • We all know what happened. Yes, we (the U.S.) dropped two atomic bombs. A lot of lives were lost, civilians included; however, more lives were saved and 2 bombs effectively ended WWII.

    So get over it.

    • @robd216 I appreciate this response. I've been kinda annoyed at the fact that some civilians die in drone attacks in the middle east but looking at it this way makes it seem a little less horrible.

  • Terrible, and it will happen again.
Both atomic bombs were deployed by order of a Democrat president incidentally.

  • That's not Hiroshima. It's Nagasaki. The camera planes got lost on Hiroshima and the only footage we have was from one of the crew members who ran back with a camera and got a few seconds of the cloud...

Or a way to stop an aggressor dead in his tracks.

    • @LiveLeakMedia: You my friend are incomprehensibly stupid.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki SAVED lives, and invasion of Japan would have cost MORE lives.
The Japanese brought war on THEMSELVES, they refused to recognize the Geneva Convention, THEY murdered MILLIONS across the Pacific including China, Burma, Indochina, the Philippines, etc.

Take a look at the casualty projection for Operation Olympia (invasion of Japan)

So by your rationale we should have invaded and had MORE deaths on BOTH sides?

      htt More..

      >Lesson learned

Alas, it didn't work at all. After that you had Bush, September 11, and then Afghanistan, Iraq, a huge recession and finally Obama...

It seems that the strategy to detonate these atomic bombs somewhere just to impress the communists has seriously backfired.

The only time they have been used in conflict....lesson learned... so far....

    • @mutterfudder

Yeah, they have been used in conflict... two times against shanty towns mostly made of paper and wood, on a flat terrain when they worked at their best, on a hilly terrain when they didn't... Now much more powerful versions wouldn't even be effective at all in Afghanistan, as in the mountains their destructive power is limited by the width of the valleys, which tend to be quite narrow when far from the sea...

These are indeed the most flamboyant weapons that humankind has ever m More..
