Scottish independence: UK 'stronger and richer together'




The prime minister is to use a speech in Edinburgh to launch what he calls a positive vision for the union between Scotland and the rest of the UK.

David Cameron will argue that the current United Kingdom makes all its nations stronger, safer and richer.

A spokesman for First Minister Alex Salmond described Mr Cameron's views as a "threadbare case for an outdated union".

It comes as Mr Cameron is due to meet Mr Salmond for talks in Edinburgh.

Mr Cameron said the fight to save the union was now under way and as prime minister he would use all he has to win it.

He will tell an Edinburgh audience: "I think that the United Kingdom is better off together.

"Of course Scotland has to make this choice - but I'll be saying I hope you opt to stay in the United Kingdom.

"Together we're actually stronger. I think we have a fairer country, a better country, a richer country with all of us together.

"But I wouldn't ever threaten people in Scotland or say they can't do what they want to do. I'll just be appealing as someone who loves the United Kingdom, who loves our shared home"

A spokesman for Alex Salmond said: "He talks about the size of the UK economy, when the reality is that an independent Scotland would be the sixth-richest country in the developed world in terms of GDP per head - compared to the UK's 16th place."

The Scottish government has signalled its intention to hold a vote in the autumn of 2014, while the UK government has called for an earlier poll.

There are also disagreements over the wording of a question, the temporary transfer of legal powers to hold a referendum and whether a second question could be included on increased powers for the Scottish Parliament.

On his meeting with the Mr Cameron, Mr Salmond said he would be stressing to the prime minister that he should not try to "run the referendum" from London.

He told the BBC: "I think we should be open minded about a second question, I think if there's a huge upsurge of opinion in the unions, in civic Scotland, towards a second question then I don't think politicians should gainsay that process.

"Secondly I support the idea of 16 and 17-year-olds getting a vote in Scotland's future.

"Now let's see what the consultations throw up, the Westminster consultation, the huge response to the Scottish government's consultation."----

  • Scotland may become independent, I wonder where they'll get the money from, to pay the unemployment, hospital, pensions and all the other welfare monstrocities. The majority of Scotts require a food supply chain and the independent government is not a producer.

    Let me guess. They'll get a small loan and get to join a region of other independent countries and the global collectivists will be skipping with glee (As I am pretty sure they are already)

    • @swade55 Good question. As with ALL socialist countries, NZ has an enormous debt, the local councils are running up enormous debt. The private sector is almost disappearing whilst corporations take over the country like a cancer. Immigration has virtually DOUBLED the population. In many area's New Zealanders are the MINORITY. In fact many business signs are now just in plain Chinese or Korean etc. NZ is screwed.

      There's over 400,ooo English now live there . THAT'S who gave SNP such a majority last time , and that's who'll swing this vote too .
      I'm no nationalist , so I'm ambivalent about it all . By the time it happens Euro will be fixed or fucked . And we couldn't do a worse job of leaking jobs than Whitehall has done . I don't like Salmond , but he's no mug and has done a great job since getting power .

      I think people have watched Braveheart too many times. The Union is so complex that it would be hard to complete. Salmond is not mug, but then again a chimp could have managed what he has with the large funds used courtesy of the rest of the Union.

      On Independence the SNP can take their share of the national debt, pay English taxpayers for the bailing out of the Royal Bank of Scotland, and paying for the Scottish Parliament building (a truly wasteful scheme).

      Seriously, whats the point, the last three PM's of GB either have a Scottish name, were educated in Scotland and from Scottish descent, or were actually Scottish!!

      I just find it wierd that so many Scots still seem to have this bone to pick with England

      Aye . Tory and Labour lost heavily in the election , SNP gained a landslide . So it's logic who they voted for , and they have done a better than average job . So if the vote goes for you'll know why .

      Maybe it's because we KNOW what you think about us , same as you seem to do with all Johnny forgeiners , taking generally here , I know you're well travelled and clued up . And the English who live there have no great problems .
