Yes, racism (bigotry in general) does exist and will continue, as long as "pocket societies" exist. Classism will be the growing form of bigotry, as the gap between the "haves" and the "have nots" will continue to widen. I guess that this is what Obama is addressing in his "Spread the Wealth" program.
Lower income and financial challenges are not exclusive to minorities. I have seen many white Americans lose their home and jobs. But here are a few observations that frustrate me.
> I have been an IT professional for over 25 years. During my career I was often responsible for hiring employees. To conform to EOE requirements, companies must attempt to hire minorities. I'd say that less than 5% of candidates I reviewed were minorities. You many think that this is because of minorities not having access to education. However, even with intern positions, where only high school education was the requirement, the number of minority candidates was just as low.
> As part of my job, I travel to different facilities. To save time, I drive through low-income areas, where most of the housing is subsidized. I often see high-end vehicles (Escalades, Hummers, Expeditions) all decked out, parked at these housing complexes. The total cost of my last three vehicles is less than a single one of those. Also, I will drive at different times of the day. I see able-bodied adults hanging around, polishing their vehicles and chatting with fellow non-working adults.
> My company operates it's own warehousing and distribution functions. The warehouse employs non-skilled workers; many are minorities. I work with warehouse supervisors regularly. On occasion a warehouse supervisor will express to me his frustration with the workforce, especially among minorities. What happens is he will hire a person, the person will perform at an acceptable level for about 6-9 months, then start to show up late, go home sick, etc. The supervisor has his hands tied because he is subjected to much scrutiny (NAACP) if he takes action to terminate the employee. So, he will lay off the employee with "job eliminated" or "business downturn" as the reason. As the employee was not fired for performance, he/she is entitled to unemployment compensation.
In talking with others, such as my stepson who is an electrician, I learned that this phenomenon is not uncommon. People will work the system by maintaining employment for the minimum required for unemployment compensation, run out the compensation period, obtain another job, work the minimum, get laid off, and so on.
Now, on top of this, Obama wants to "spread the wealth."

...which leads to more administrative costs. The spending on administration and paperwork within the US healthcare system is a joke. I worked there in Oregon in the early 1990's.
I will take taxpayers money going to a National Health Service any day than give it to a profit driven company who's bottom line is profit.

I wander if I send my house payment and fuel charge card bills directly to the White House or will they just pick them up. I am not black. I hope that doesnt have anything to do with it.

If you took all the wealth of the world and spread it to everyone, we'd all starve within a week!

So you are saying that laziness and sloth is a racial trait? I see plenty of white people doing the same thing here in the UK.
The only socialist policy I agree with wholeheartedly is universal health-care. It is the greatest legacy that the Labour party left us after WWII and I cherish it. I am conservative when it comes to many issues but universal health-care in Britain makes me proud. I cannot understand why some Americans fear it.

because they're selfish fucks who only care about themselves
i have no problem sacrificing some of my paycheck for the health care of all other americans. no problem at all. i have a big problem if that money goes into funding unnecessary wars, though.

You have not been to the county hospitals in this country.Guess what they are warehouses. America's health technology subsidies the rest of the world. If we did not invest in the technology - you would not get the benefits.

It seems to me that you and other like minded individuals are misinterpreting what Obama's plan of "spread the wealth" means. You are assuming that he plans on taking from the rich and giving to the poor when actually he wants the wealth spread to everyone, particularly to the middle class. His plan is to ensure that every American citizen has a right to basic needs like healthcare, education and housing. All you people who are worried your money is going to the slackers in this count More..

I am one who voted for BO and I make Over 250k a year. But even taxed more I wont loose money ill just lay off people to match the money lost. Like any business is going to do. Your smarts on economics isnt to bright. If anyone in this thread thinks one business will loose money your morons. They will just layoff people untill it equals up. If you think different your truly a fool.

if we give tax cuts to the middle and lower class Americans, in other words the vast majority of Americans who need those cuts the most, that's "socialism" according to many Republicans, conservatives, and libertarians (i.e., greedier Republicans)
if we give those tax cuts to large corporations and the richest 10 percent of the population, or so, that's not "socialism"
yeah, that makes sense

I'm surprised you voted OB... OBs tax on you isn't going to hurt you much... the failing economy is another story... depending on the type of business, you can survive, by trimming down, or (and I hope not for you) the business will close... but that's been coming now for a long while...
my buddies landscaping business in FLA just went bust a few months back... and alot of small stores down here in FLA are closing bigtime....
a sign of the times... good luck to you SS though..
More..
