Panorama - Poor America (BBC, 2012)

With one and a half million American children now homeless, reporter
Hilary Andersson meets the school pupils who go hungry in the richest
country on Earth. From those living in the storm drains under Las Vegas
to the tent cities now springing up around the United States, Panorama
finds out how the poor are surviving in America and asks whatever
happened to Barack Obama's vision for the country.

  • Just a factual observation, these "poor" people all look over fed, and America's idea of poor, is far different then lets say-Dafar as one example. Unless jobs are kept in America, this dynamic is not going to "change".

  • Listen our economy is in the shitter, no doubt. But when it comes to hungry children, the numbers they throw around are very doubtful. They say 1 in 4 kids goes to bed hungry, something like that. Come on, wtf! They will put anyone on foodstamps these days, just ask.

  • Vegas has always had a bad homeless problem. Gambling and substance abuse screws people up and they end up on the street. I can guarantee that first couple is fucked up on something. And anyone that is this poor can apply for food stamps. That family in the hotel room with that many kids would get over $1000 a month for food and they might qualify for welfare cash on top of that.

  • You can dispute the numbers, but you can't ignore the tent cities. All we need to decide on is their name: Bushvilles or Obamavilles. (And, as a reminder, Hoover got the unjustified credit the last time around.)

Coincidentally , I just read an article in the Mail Online titled: "This is not wartime Nazi Germany and Cameron's attacks on the vulnerable and needy must be stopped."

Seems you folks make terminally ill people who have more than 6 months to live work for benefits. Talk about appalling. Obviously we all have more work to do for our vulnerable.

Sorry if I appeared thin skinned, I wasn't trying to be. I agree with you and was pointing out that article because I just read it less than an hour ago so it was very fresh. I absolutely agree with you. What I can't figure out is how we (U.S.) still have unfortunates like that when 70% of our budget goes to assistance programs? One thing I do know is there is this defeatist cycle of poverty in some areas here where folks just have become apathetic and totally dependent on benefits for se More..

One thing we do have here is the MacMillan trust which is a charity and helps not only those who are suffering with cancer, but also their familys. They fight your corner with the goverment ensuring you get every single piece of financial help you're entitled to which you just wouldnt be aware of-i know this because i've used them.Ten years ago i was told that i had cancer and if not operated on soon i would die. Then you have two options-have the op and possibly live, but risk loosing h More..

  • Just listen to what the politician says
"We need policies to make sure they become independent again"
He thinks more policy is the answer. POS politicians always think more policy is the answer when it was actually the cause.

Did you know that now 20% of our population is totally dependent on government for all their needs from food, housing, medical, retirement etc ? 70% of our Federal budget goes to assistance programs. The money seems to be there but the distribution is all screwed up. I also don't think gutting an already underfunded Social Security by $100 billion so that folks can take home an extra $40 is very wise.
