March 11, 2011 New Port Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Miyagi Exhibition Center Guests were evacuated to the roof of the Exhibition Center immediately after the earthquake. The tsunami occurred several minutes later, as they watched as the wave swallowed up everything in front of them.
Event staff on the roof used loudspeakers, to urge guests outside to "Please return to the building." At first the tone was polite but then become more urgent as the water approached the building. They were keenly aware of the seriousness of the situation, and the tone of their voices changed to commands.

"Some cars were floated and moved into the exhibition hall of Miyagi Yume Messe, and broke exterior glass. No damage of the building was observed caused by the vibration of the earthquake."

There was something on a recent program about the same situation at the airport. Staff was rushing people up to the roof but there were still folks down in the parking lot when the wave came. No telling how many of them made it.
