    These islands were never really part of Japan or Korea. Both claim them now because possessing the islands gains the country exclusive economic rights in the surrounding seas, and that's really all this is about. It's not possible to live on the islands in any sustainable fashion. They are just rocks in the middle of the Sea of Japan. Both Korean and Japanese fishermen historically put to temporary port at the islands on occasion.
