Christian Science Monitor Afghanistan, but NATO's ability to shape events has largely come to an end, with the fighting at a stalemate, stalled peace negotiations, and incidents of Afghan security forces turning against their international counterparts.

Officials say international war and aid efforts are ongoing, but there are few indications that they will yield different results.

Rather than asking what more the international community can do in Afghanistan, the question may now be, What kind of legacy will the past decade of international influence leave here, and how long can it last?

  • This isn't a war we're trying to win. It's a testing ground for all of our new toys. Trust me, if we wanted to "win" this shit would have been over YEARS ago.

  • Hmmm pretty sure the objective of our war was to topple the Taliban Government. It took a matter of weeks to get that done.... What is happening now is call rebuilding. If we were still fighting a stand up war do you think US soldiers would have their hands tied behind their backs with Backwards ROE? It seems not the objective of the war is trying to get afghans to take responsibility for themselves and take care of their own country without starting yet another war in your shit hole of a coun More..

    • @Warrenz666 They've had 1500. 100 won't make any difference. You can't beat civilization into a muslim any more than you can teach astrophysics to a goat.

  • The first takeaway should be: Don't expect to win a war when you have 'safe-haven' countries next door. Didn't work that well in Korea, Nam, Iraq or Afghanistan...

  • Their destiny is in the hands of the voters unless someone like karzai steals the election again. Since most of them are illiterate, and brainwashed by religion, I don't have much hope. I suddenly have a vision of pearls before swine.
