  • Just put it in 1st gear, and you will deliver your packages in half the time...

  • Found this in one of my car forums. I've had this happen before, scares the crap out of you for a minute or two. The dude should have been bailing packages out the back though.

In many vehicles, a crankcase breather pipe feeds into the air intake to vent the crankcase. On a highly worn engine, gases can blow past the sides of the pistons and into the crankcase, then carry oil mist from the crankcase into the air intake via the breather. The engine will run on this oil mist, since engine oil has More..

  • Pop hood. Rip off air filter as fast as you can. Stuff rag in intake. Problem solved.

  • Fucking idiot, its likely running on its on engine oil. Probably a turbo seal failure. You need positive air shutoff.

Usually you can disconnect the air cleaner and stick a clipboard to the pipe to shut it off.

  • lol, disconnecting the battery isnt going to kill it. Need to suffocate it, plug the air intake.

  • Standard Transmission.
Step 1: Put truck in the highest gear you have.
    Step 2: Dump the clutch.
    Problem Solved.

  • disconnecting the battery won't work its run away (sucking oil from crankcase into cylynders and burning.. increaseing RPM and sucking more and so on).. you have to choke it off.. best thing to do is get the fuck away from it before it blows up and you find a half of connecting rod stuck in forehead

    • @4sureative Hence the term "run away" I know thats not what it means but it seems logical ;) I saw a few runaways at Wyotech, not the power jokes, 8v71's, now that is a sight.

  • this is what they call diesel engine running away, it happens when a highly worn engine consumes its own engine oil supply as vapour or mist and it gets into the air intake and burns as fuel. the only way to stop it is to stall the engine or suirt a CO2 extinguiger into air intake.
    The engine wont blow up.
UPS dont retire their package cars and some of them have astronomical mileage on them.

    • @_Decameron_

THey do retire them... They keep their trucks for 10 years...

Stupid eh? That works out to be about 100,000 miles a year (they work harder than taxi-cabs) and a million miles over 10.

Mind you they replace the engines...

    • @chrisfrd i work for UPS they dont retire them, the model you see is the P80 they scrap them when they can no longer be fixed economicaly, even then they are stripped of virtually everything which is then re-used then they cut up into bits whats left to ensure knowone gets their hands on them

    • @_Decameron_ The engine could blow up. Too much oil in the intake, and hydrolock says hi.

  • hmmmmm...

    "almost blows up"...

Well it 'almost' got struck by lightening.
It 'almost' got struck by a meteorite.

    But it didn't.

    • @cessus Well said!

    • @cessus - It's his work van... he's probably hoping it will blow up so he can get a new one. There's no way I'd be putting my hands anywhere near the moving parts of an engine bouncing off the rev limiter if it wasn't my own money at stake.

  • this is a diesel motor with a turbo. The turbo bearings and seals are shot and so the oil feeding the turbo gets fed into the intake. Disconnecting the battery will do nothing. The only thing you can do with a runaway diesel is cut off the intake, not with your hand. like a piece of wood or steel. you have to smother it essentially

    • @nichill33 Exactly. Had a diesel CFM air tool generator do this to me once. Had to block the air intake with my clip board. For a second i thought the clip board was gonna get sucked in. I was also able to cut off the fuel pump. Its pretty scary when it happens, cause it really does take off to max RPM. But yeah killing the battery will do dick in that situation.

    • @nichill33 that's some freaky shiz there.
saw vid of a runaway turbo the other day and i was actually cringing.
