A-10 Warthog: Attack Run
I was surprised to find out that the USAF planned on scrapping the plane in 1990 due to lack of role within the military since it was presumed that the AH-64 could take care of the close air support role which was the traditional role of army aviation instead of the air forces'.
It was the Gulf War in 1991 that secured the A-10's role in the US military. It killed more enemy armored vehicles and tanks than any other system.
The A-10 is a sweet-ass bird

The A-10 was designed to fly with one tail, one engine, with control redundancies. Literally a flying tank these things...

Beautiful, deadly, badass plane. I remember seeing or reading an interview with taliban pricks saying when they saw this plane enter the battlefield they knew it was time to go. Definitely the Honey Badger of the aircraft world. Glad it's on my side.

@holapola We had the harrier jump jet, but its been replaced by the f35, we have no need for a10s.

@420pm i never said we need it, it just would be incredible to have such a good peice of kit in our airforce. and for cas, nothing compares to the a10 imo, its slow speed is one of its biggest strong points.

@holapola F35 can hover like the harrier! thats even slower through the air. but fixed wing aircrafts cant compare to choppers for cas.

@420pm A F35 isn't going to go into hover mode to provide CAS. apache are extremely good for CAS yes but take a lot longer to get to the soldiers on the ground, a10 can be fast when it wants to be but extremely slow aswell.
with its slow speed, it's able to circle the target and provide devastating strafing runs and laser guided missiles when it wants to, f35 can't circle the target fullstop because of its speed and how modern it is.

To even think of scrapping this plane shows how out of touch some are.

The politicians never seem to figure out that having a lot of dissimilar aircraft is a big advantage in combat. They're always trying to combine war machines into multirole platforms that wind up wildly expensive and ineffective at each one of their roles.
