Because they've been around so long, there's been talk of retiring the A10; but it would be insane. It's simultaneously one of the most battle-effective and cost-effective military aircraft ever made. And a triumph of design, in numerous respects. These quotes from its Wikipedia page are examples:
"The A-10 is exceptionally tough. ... The aircraft is designed to fly with one engine, one tail, one elevator, and half of one wing missing."
"The cockpit and parts of the flight-co More..

Very much so. At one time he was CO in charge of all Marine aviation training in Pensacola. Prior to that he flew combat missions in Vietnam in several different fighter aircraft. He also flew a number of helicopters.
I have a massive gold-trimmed coffee cup with his initials on it from a prior post. His wife gave it to me soon after he passed.
Well, not his initials exactly but those of his job: CO. :-) It bears a set of pilot's wings and the Cobra logo of HMA-169.

"In his honor, I use the cup. I think he'd prefer that to letting it sit on a shelf. Just had some Earl Grey in it a few hours ago."
hahaha. He'd like that

I know a guy named Larry... saw 5(4? I dunno wasn't there... he told me the story, but I'm a shitty recording device) of his buds killed in action when their 'copter was shot down in 1967. Dude only lost a few fingers. Great person.

BTW, I think I had Pensacola wrong; he talked abut Pensacola but I think he was CO at Pendleton.

"Right during prayer time too". Good way to die. They're doing them an honor by removing them from that hell hole.

Yea you are probably right. Some one with some brass was looking at a piece of paper making a decision he basically knew nothing about. This is no doubt my favorite plane, but I am partial to bombers b2 and such.

30 mm GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling-type cannon. One of the most powerful aircraft cannons ever flown, it fires large depleted uranium armor-piercing shells. Each shell weigha almost 3lbs. Fixed rate of 3,900 rounds per minute. The cannon takes about half a second to come up to speed, so 50 rounds are fired during the first second, 65 or 70 rounds per second thereafter. The gun is accurate enough to place 80% of its shots within a 40-foot (12.4 m) diameter circle from 4,000 feet (1,220 m) while in flig More..
