Silver medal in the advanced category is not like silver medal in the unlimited category out of which world champions titles come. Again in 2011 he wasn't on the list:

It's an aerobatic glider, a Swift S-1. It is very strong (stressed for plus and minus 10g) and manoeuvrable (a roll takes 4 seconds) (from wiki)

Crazy to see a sailplane used like this. I've taken a few dozen tours over Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada mountains in one of these.... never occured to me to try and put it in a flat spin or do acrobatic stuff with it.

Sure, but he flies with an engine like a pussy. These sail planes don't have engines or propellers, hence why they are towed up by another plane to altitude.

Or by a high power cable winch.
Which is actually much cooler than being towed by a plane, because the initial g-forces are the most extreme I have ever experienced. Better than any sports car.

I dont think it would be that extreme, since people report losing consciousness for a split second on a catapult start. ;)
But its pretty hard for sure, I always felt like my face was deforming a lot during it. For me it was the most exciting thing of the whole flight and quite scary in windy weather. The first time the cable snapped while I was being "kited", I almost got a heart attack.
Oh and the guy controlling the winch also played a huge factor. Some were madmen wh More..
