House Democrats push $10 minimum wage bill

conservatives want people to starve on $ 7.25 hour. but you will never hear them talk about the over payed jobs they have.(fox news anchors) http://www.foxnews.com/

I own 2 small businesses and all my close friends own a business the only people i see hurting are working people i could easily pay more like most small business owners $10 a hour is still scraps to pay a man.

  • Minimum wage was never meant to be a comfortable living wage.

Raising the minimum wage will put people out of work. That is the cold, hard truth.

  • raise minimum wage to $50.00 per hour and people will still piss it away, and prices will rise to make that wage useless. it's a circle of fools.

    • @fresnopete absolutely spot-on! The only way businesses can recover the cost is to raise the prices on their goods or services. Anyway it shakes out the consumer, event the one who just got the raise is going to have to pay.

And HighSociety you as well are a IDIOT ,if you want to pay your employees more, PAY THEM MORE. What you need to Goverment to tell you to pay your employee's more, GEEZEE REALLY

    • @highsociety - "and still can give more" OK then give more idiot , but do not tell me I NEED TO GIVE MORE. I own a business and have employee's and meet payroll and have a $7.25 an hour job “high school student”. And if minimum wage goes to $10.00 I will be minus one high school student. So who wins then , Liberetard ?

  • ...It's America, you can payed as much as you want and there are limits on how little people can get paid. If you are making 7.25 an hour you better be a teenager otherwise you've made some awful, awful choices in your life. The 7.25 an hour should also be a big incentive to do something to better your skill set so you can make more an hour. It's shameful to think one would just wait around and hope minimum wage increased so they could get a raise.

  • Do they know that raising the minimum wage will require businesses to raise prices on goods or services to pay for that wage increase? At best, it will cancel out the wage increase. Worst case scenario, jobs sent overseas, layoffs, shrinking small businesses, dollar devaluation, etc.

I wouldn't say "require" - they may just need to adjust their salary and bonus model for the upper tier of management. I don't think $10/hr is unreasonable in 2012. I agree that unions and ultra high basic wages can kill a company, but so can some idiot CEO who runs a company into the ground and walks away with a $30 million bonus. America needs to rethink it's Wal-Mart ideology of cheap shit made in China, but whether we start at the bottom or the top is a chicken or egg s More..

    • @j_ramone

The problem with your way of thinking is that thousands of small business's don't have big salaries for upper management and no bonus of any kind. That's why an across the board minimum wage is not the answer. You can't compare a small family business with Wal-Mart.

    • @Captain Canuck
I agree - I worked for a family business, and they paid me well. The owner still had his big house and fancy cars, but he also was able to pay the warehouse workers at least $10 an hour. It's a different animal than Wal-Mart or some other massive company, but I maintain that in 2012 if they can't pay their entry level employees $10/hr they're either doing something wrong or they need to do it themselves.

I would have to agree with you that small business's should be able to pay $10/hour. In some regions that may well be possible. In Ontario the Liberal Party has had a long rule with an all out assault on business and the middle class. The cost of everything has soared.

Alberta on the other hand is booming. Taxes are much lower, electricity is about a third of what we pay in Ontario and the list goes on.

  • Ahhh, the hell with all that fuddy-duddy classical economics about currency devaluation and artificial inflation of labor costs. The hell with basic math and rational analysis! Shoot for $20 an hour.

    Nahhh... let's make it $30!

  • Great. More layoffs and more businesses shut down.

What makes anyone think employers can afford to jack up wages by almost 50% overnight?

    Unbelievable.

    • @hdadd

Ontario raised minimum wage to $10.25/hr. They phased it in over three years, which worked out to 8% each of the three years. My business also has to pay payroll taxes on those wages. The result was I laid off all three full-time employees, fired a part-time employee, shortened my business's hours and cut the hours of my remaining three part-timers.

I didn't do it out of greed. Most small business's already have tight margins due to competition. Hydro in Ontario has almost tripled More..

  • if this happens say good bye to even more jobs to over seas labor and more people being fired. let the "free market" decide whats fair pay

  • MOST SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE WENT TO SCHOOL! worked hard to get good grades. fox employees are lawyers, prosecutors,judges,etc... you have a problem with them being successful when they worked hard to get that way? WTF? small business owners that can't afford 10 bucks a hour, will just down size their work force. anyone making minimum wage...apparently were to busy partying to do good in school.
