They aren't surfing by choice. They have young with them and they are staying with them because they cant fly yet.

@Zipper10 - I only laughed because I thought they were okay, being their Geese and all. After watching it again, I see that they are in trouble, so I feel bad now for laughing, I love animals, and never want to see them hurt or suffer. Sorry if I seemed cold.

Trust me people, these geese did not die. These birds live in the water. They have webbed feet, natural life jackets, and they can swim underwater well enough to catch fish. Notice how they all lined up facing upstream as they approached the wave. They werent trying to get away, they were just setting up for it. Some of the adults even dropped back on the wave when they could have escaped.
I have been paddling whitewater kayaks for years and have swam waves just like that one many time More..
