  • I'd like to see old people's teeth in this tribe, how they hold up after this treatment. Because the enamel is not covering the parts that are exposed after chipping, so the bacteria can easily multiply and acid attack the ivory. What a barbaric practice. Isn't there a tribal chief who could put a stop to this? They do it only as a fashion statement after all and fashions change.

actually, insects are a staple food for a quarter of human beings on the planet.
It is infact the only reliable source of protein in some parts of the world.
Without it 100's of millions of people would starve to death.

And for us living in the western world.. Don't think we're much better, ooh no.
Most of us will quite happily partake in the consumption of shellfish such as shrimp and lobster who are a very closely related to insects.

    • @Kasmackba Shrimp and caterpillars are a completely different kettle of fish.

yes. one is the larval form of an insect, the other is a crustacean.

They are however very closely related.
Believe it or not but technically speaking insects are crustaceans.
For more information there's a short non technical summary on the subjectmatter here:

It's a boiled down version of an article published in Nature a couple of years ago.

    • @Kasmackba Yeah that's all well and good, but I'm talking about more of a consumption view. Shrimp are tasty and quite common to eat, but a dish with a caterpillar would be disgusting. I'm sure you'd agree.

Plenty of insects are quite tasty actually. From the spicy peppery but alas sometimes bitter ants to the Australian witchetty grub which oddly enough tastes like almonds, it's especially good lightly roasted with it's exoskeleton turned crispy and the otherwise gelatinous innards solidify like a lightly poached egg. They are a sought after treat in an environment that offers very little else to eat.

  • Let's evaluate a short time later.
The bugger carved off the protective layer of enamel leaving the whole under structure open for decay.
