Why are people so scared of birds? They sense anxiety so it wont ever help to be scared near any bird. Guy left the bird out there on the ground... eh. Not much compassion.
Looks like it took a really hard hit on that overhang. Maybe paralyzed or cracked it's little skull :/

Usually when they have their mouth open like that they are overheating like a dog.

When I lived out in the country (Southern US), birds hit my windows all the time. Supposedly they get drunk off poke berries and are drunk fliers. It knocked them out cold for a few minutes or so after they hit.
