Texas Man Finds His Stolen Car on eBay — 42 Years After Its Theft
A man whose prized sports car was stolen 42 years ago recovered the vehicle after spotting it on eBay, authorities said Sunday.
Robert Russell told the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department that he never gave up searching for the 1967 Austin Healy after it was stolen from his Philadelphia home in 1970.
Russell, a 66-year-old retired sales manager, scoured the Internet for years looking for his car, while also keeping an eye out for similar looking Healeys on the streets.
Russell recently spotted what he thought was his car on eBay and, after checking the vehicle identification number on the website and with the one on the car’s title certificate, found they were a match, the department said in a news release.
“Ever since eBay showed up, I’d check it periodically,” Russell said. “I checked it on Friday, May 11, and there it was.” He immediately contacted the dealership, Beverly Hills Car Club, and informed them of the situation — bluntly too.
“I hate to sound indelicate,” Russell told the dealer, “but you’re selling a stolen car.”
Russell, who now lives in Texas, then contacted the department in May and Detective Carlos Ortega tracked down the car in East Los Angeles. He has since brought it back to Texas. His hometown wasn’t immediately available.
Russell told deputies that he bought the vehicle for $3,000. It’s now valued at $23,000. He said “he continued his search for the vehicle, not for its monetary value, but because it had sentimental value to him and his wife,” the department said.
While it is certainly a happy ending for Russell and his beloved car, the dealer who was duped into buying the stolen car is reportedly out $27,000 plus what it cost them to ship it to California.

So Russel thinks he made a profit did he? hehehe Does they even consider the Consumer price index?
-$300 dollars 100 years ago is equal to probably about $20,000-$30,000 today

Incredible. I can't imagine the feeling he had when he sat back in the driver's seat for the first time 42 years.

It has sentimental value to the couple as it was the location where his wife first swallowed his seed.

Is a good looking car too. And there aren't many like them now. Specially a British made car.

Good for him and his wife!
How did the dealership get duped? Were they complicit?
Was there a false title? There are many ways to check.

at first, the mexifornia cops weren't going to help him get it back. they said it had to be an active case. he contacted the cops where it was stolen and they had to fiddle with the status of the case to get it to work.

What I don't understand is how end up in a car sales lot. Didn't they check the title and VIN to ensure it was legit.

it is strange. only thing i could guess at is the person who had possession held onto it long enough for it to fall off the DMV and stolen auto records, then gave it a shot at selling it. sending it all the way across the country leads me to believe the person figured it would be less likely to show up and be recognized.
the local cops where it was originally reported stolen had to create a new category, in order to bring it back into the stolen auto category. they didn' More..

All that stuff is on computers now days. When they moved their records to computers they propably saved some money and didn't go all that far back in history, so 42 year old car thef is likely to go missing unless somebody goes through a lot of paper files.

Some sort of legal action at least; if the cops are not too lazy, they would look further into it.

Wow to cool and the fact it is still in beautiful shapes just amazing. Now did he have to pay back his insurance company because technically they owned the car if they paid for it. Don't even know if you had to have insurance so long ago.
