A bisexual high school student is claiming her right to free speech has been violated after she was sent home from school because her 'I enjoy vagina' T-shirt was deemed a distraction.

Brianna Demato, 15, from Queens, New York, wore the red T-shirt - which is in the style of the famous Coca-Cola logo - to Newtown High School on Tuesday.When the school dean saw the offending T-shirt at lunch time, she was sent to the principal's office where she was presented with the option of changing or going home.

When she refused to change, her mother was called. But instead of siding with the school, she defended her daughter.

Cathy Demato told the New York Daily News: 'They’re discriminating against Brianna. They pulled her out of class for nothing. She’s not hurting anyone. It’s her right to wear that shirt.' Brianna called the school's actions hypocritical and said she has worn it countless times before without trouble.

'They use the word in class', she said. 'Why can’t I, on a shirt?'


When Mrs Demato argued with the school saying her daughter should be allowed to stay in school with the T-shirt on, the pair were escorted off school campus.

Refusing to back down, Mrs Demato defiantly told the Daily News: 'Wednesday she’s wearing a shirt that says "I’m the b*** from down the block".'The message is, she can wear whatever she wants.'School officials - who deny having the mother and daughter escorted off campus - said if she comes in with a distracting T-shirt again she will have to complete her work in a separate classroom.

Agency spokeswoman Margie Feinberg said: 'The language on the shirt was likely to cause disruption and the language is inappropriate for school.'

Mrs Demato insisted her daughter’s clothes aren’t a distraction: 'You can’t stop somebody from being who they are. My daughter is whoever she wants to be.'
