The SR-71 Blackbird meets up with its ancestor, the U2 spy plane, and they fly through the clouds together over the desert.
Here's an interesting excerpt from an SR-71 pilot:
One day, high above Arizona , we were monitoring the radio traffic of
all the mortal airplanes below us. First, a Cessna pilot asked the air
traffic controllers to check his ground speed. 'Ninety knots,' ATC
replied.
A twin Bonanza soon made the same request. 'One-twenty on the
ground,' was the reply. To our surprise, a navy F-18 came over the radio
with a ground speed check. I knew exactly what he was doing. Of course,
he had a ground speed indicator in his cockpit, but he wanted to let
all the bug-smashers in the valley know what real speed was 'Dusty 52,
we show you at 620 on the ground,' ATC responded.
The situation was too
ripe. I heard the click of Walter's mike button in the rear seat. In his
most innocent voice, Walter startled the controller by asking for a
ground speed check from 81,000 feet, clearly above controlled airspace.
In a cool, professional voice, the controller replied, ' Aspen 20, I
show you at 1,982 knots on the ground.' We did not hear another transmission on that frequency all the way to the coast.

Also, for trivia points, the SR-71 was actually four very similar variants of the same aircraft design, but only one variant was the SR-71. These were the A-12, YF-12, M-21, and SR-71.

The SR-71 is my all time favorite plane. A new category called "Super Badass" would work.

Damn, the U2 looks absolutely ancient beside the BlackBird. I'd love to know what it's replacement is. I've never seen a more beautiful Bird.

@Ruffus Satellites replaced them. No need to endanger a pilot anymore.

The SR-71 looks so far ahead of it's time. Incredibly beautiful aircraft. They have one on display at the Hill AFB Museum in Utah.

No Way was the U2 the ancestor of the SR-71. They were totally different designs and the U2 flew before the SR-71 and kept flying after the SR-71 was retired.

@BloodyPeasant
I assume ancestor to be a lineal relationship. Grandad-dad-you.
In this example there is no relationship at all.
Just look at the flight videos. The SR-71 is desperately trying to fly at low speed with the nose very high. The U2 is almost level.
They have totally different aerodynamic performance and obviously totally different wing and engine design.
The U2 was basically a jet powered slow-speed glider of very old design.
The SR-71 was a high performance high speed high a More..
