tunis envoy came to US for negotiations, barter for tribute when we captured their vessels which attempted to defy the blockade. Mellimelli asked for tribute, lying that he'd be beheaded if unsuccessful. Then he asked for whores ("concubines").
takes pot shot at Indians :
"Differences in culture and customs stirred interest on both sides. Mellimelli’s generous use of scented rose oil was noted by many of those who met him, and guards had to be posted outside his lodgings to turn away the curious. For his part, the Tunisian was surprised at the social freedom women enjoyed in America and was especially intrigued by several delegations of Native Americans from the western territories then visiting Washington. Mellimelli inquired which prophet the Indians followed: Moses, Jesus Christ or Mohammed. When he was told none of them, that they worshiped “the Great Sprit” alone, he was reported to have pronounced them “vile hereticks.”

A snippet of his speech that deserves to be singled out for special scorn.
Obama said that Ramadan is a reminder that Islam has always been part of America.
"The first Muslim ambassador to the United States, from Tunisia, was hosted by President Jefferson, who arranged a sunset dinner for his guest because it was Ramadan — making it the first known iftar at the White House, more than 200 years ago."
How very disingenuous. We have here a fact presented not merely out of context, but so deceitfully as to be a laughable fraud.
First of all, the term 'a part of America' needs some thoughtful defining. I think we can mostly agree that the implication is that the mere act of feting the Tunisian envoy during his diplomatic mission to the US is some sort of general inclusion of Islam into the American experience at that early date.
How? Merely through his temporary presence in our country? Even though we were in conflict with his state at the time?
This isn't the first time Obama has spouted this same warped poppycock. From his Cairo speech in 2009:
“Islam has always been a part of America’s story. The first nation to recognize my country was Morocco. In signing the Treaty of Tripoli in 1796, our second President John Adams wrote, “The United States has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Muslims.”
And when the first Muslim-American was recently elected to Congress, he took the oath to defend our Constitution using the same Holy Koran that one of our Founding Fathers – Thomas Jefferson – kept in his personal library.”

"Islam has always been a part of America’s story."
Indeed!
That would be the same Treaty of Tripoli that was essentially a protection racket against the United States, requiring that tribute be paid to avoid being the victim of piracy.
That would be the same John Adams who reluctantly figured that bribing the pirates of Barbary was cheaper than military engagement (out of an understanding that the political will and money for creating the necessary naval force was out of reach for the time being).
And that would be the same Thomas Jefferson who, with his great knowledge and understanding of the Koran, reversed our course and decided that military engagement against the various Muslim states engaged in piracy was the only sensible way to proceed.
And then bombarded their coastline, invaded them, and persuaded them to find a new hobby.
This particular piece of history cannot be rewritten to suit current PC needs. The reasons for the envoy's visit cannot be recast into some pap about multicultural understanding.
And this earliest merging of Islam into 'the American story'- where we invade and punish them for their banditry- is not the sort of event someone with half a brain uses as a bragging point about American inclusiveness.
The best that can be said about our regard for Islam at the time is this: The United States' concern was for the economic and physical safety of the United States' interests and people and there was no religious conflict in effect (“The United States has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Muslims.”).
That's it. We don't have a problem with you because of what you believe, but because of what you do.
It's pretty much the same deal now, frankly.

Obama's Lies About Islam And American History
(With a hat tip to Infidel Bloggers Alliance)
Do Americans know enough of their own nation's heritage and history to have picked up on Obama's lie that Thomas Jefferson held the first iftar dinner at the White House?
Or do Americans suck down Obama's lying swill (aka revisionist history) and believe it because Obama is a slick package and looks good in a well-tailored suit?
From Ace of Spades:

Maybe I've missed it, but I have yet to hear the mainstream media call Obama out on his misrepresentation of the fact about Thomas Jefferson and his dealings with Moslems.
And, as I queried at the beginning of this post, how many Americans actually believe Obama's lies about Islam and American history? This most recent lie isn't the only one. Not by a long shot.

Obamination: Iftar al-TaqiyyaAug 14, 2010 at 3:16 AM 6 comments I was disgusted but not surprised by what I heard on the news broadcast about President Obama's remarks at the White House Iftar. I went in search of a transcript but did not find it at the White House web site. It turned up at a propaganda site for foreign consumption: America.gov. My intention is to refute the treason lie by lie. I will put the lies in block quote format interspersed with my comments at full margin. Use the link above if you want to read the whole screed uninterrupted.
And these events celebrate the role of faith in the lives of the American people. They remind us of the basic truth that we are all children of God, and we all draw strength and a sense of purpose from our beliefs.
............................
The Muslim's purpose is to fight in Allah's cause; to make Islam dominate the entire world. Their purpose is to conquer us. Sweet, beneficent & spiritual indeed.
These events are also an affirmation of who we are as Americans. Our Founders understood that the best way to honor the place of faith in the lives of our people was to protect their freedom to practice religion. In the Virginia Act of Establishing Religion Freedom, Thomas Jefferson wrote that “all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion.” The First Amendment of our Constitution established the freedom of religion as the law of the land. And that right has been upheld ever since.
Freedom of religion, a foundational virtue of America; how noble of President Obama to affirm it. President Obama applies it to Islam, accepting the common fallacious assumption that Islam is a religion. In fact, Islam is a "deen"--way of life which encompasses all aspects of human life, including faith. Islam's faith component serves two purposes: it prevents us from perceiving the reality of Islam's mission and it motivates Muslims to fight, kill and be killed in world conquest.
We see Muslims raising their butts to the moon and hear them howling. How sweet, they are praying to their god, Islam must be a religion, beneficent, anodyne; an equally valid pathway to the sublime. But what are they really doing? Each time they pray, they recite the first Surah, which includes these verses.
....................
And Muslim Americans serve with honor in our military.
Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, S.O.A. & Sgt. Asan Akbar for example?
For in the end, we remain “one nation, under God, indivisible.” And we can only achieve “liberty and justice for all” if we live by that one rule at the heart of every great religion, including Islam — that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us.
Liberty & justice are not advanced by allowing their sworn enemies to occupy us as a fifth column and erect symbols of their triumph over our battlefields. Islam attacks, it kills, it enslaves; it does not live and let live. It has no golden rule. President Obama is one of them, not one of us.

Dealings with Mellimelli, Colorful Envoy from Tunis

Tunisian Envoy
From Thomas Jefferson Encyclopedia
A salute from the guns of the frigate USS Congress announced the arrival of the Tunisian Envoy.[1] Sidi Soliman Mellimelli and his attendants were greeted at the Washington Navy Yard on the morning of November 30, 1805, by full military honors and a crowd of curious onlookers. The curious were not to be disappointed by the appearance of the first Muslim envoy to the United States – a large figure with a full dark beard dressed in robes of richly embroidered fabrics and a turban of fine white muslin.
A 19th-Century engraving of Barbary state officials in ceremonial garbOver the next six months, this exotic representative from a distant and unfamiliar culture would add spice to the Washington social season but also test the diplomatic abilities of President Thomas Jefferson and his administration.
The backdrop to this state visit was the ongoing conflict between the United States and the Barbary states, autonomous provinces of the Ottoman Empire that rimmed the Mediterranean coast of North Africa. Soon after the Revolutionary War and the consequent loss of the British navy’s protection, American merchant vessels had become prey for Barbary corsairs. Jefferson was outraged by the demands of ransom for civilians captured from American vessels and the Barbary states’ expectation of annual tribute to be paid as insurance against future seizures. He took an uncharacteristically hawkish position against the prevailing thought that it was cheaper to pay tribute than maintain a navy to protect shipping from piracy.
The crisis with Tunis erupted when the USS Constitution captured Tunisian vessels attempting to run the American blockade of Tripoli. The bey of Tunis threatened war and sent Mellimelli to the United States to negotiate full restitution for the captured vessels and to barter for tribute.
Jefferson balked at paying tribute but accepted the expectation that the host government would cover all expenses for such an emissary. He arranged for Mellimelli and his 11 attendants to be housed at a Washington hotel, and rationalized that the sale of the four horses and other fine gifts sent by the bey of Tunis would cover costs. Mellimelli’s request for “concubines” as a part of his accommodations was left to Secretary of State James Madison. Jefferson assured one senator that obtaining peace with the Barbary powers was important enough to “pass unnoticed the irregular conduct of their ministers.”
Despite whispers regarding his conduct, Mellimelli received invitations to numerous dinners and balls, and according to one Washington hostess was “the lion of the season.” At the president’s New Year’s Day levee the Tunisian envoy provided “its most brilliant and splendid spectacle,” and added to his melodramatic image at a later dinner party hosted by the secretary of state. Upon learning that the Madisons were unhappy at being childless, Mellimelli flung his “magical” cloak around Dolley Madison and murmured an incantation that promised she would bear a male child. His conjuring, however, did not work.
Differences in culture and customs stirred interest on both sides.
Mellimelli was in Washington during Ramadan, a month-long period in which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. To accommodate his guest’s religious obligation, Jefferson’s invitation to the President’s House on December 9 changed the time of dinner from the usual “half after three” to “precisely at sunset.”
At the same time Mellimelli was enlivening Washington society he was engaged in serious diplomatic exchanges with Jefferson and Madison. They agreed upon restitution for the captured Tunisian vessels but still grappled with the issue of tribute. Ultimately, Mellimelli used a tactic that appealed to the Americans’ humanity: He said that that if he failed in his mission he would be beheaded upon his return home. The Americans refused to yield to the idea of tribute, but in a meeting of the Cabinet it was agreed to send to Tunis gifts equivalent in cost to those sent to the United States by the bey.
Mellimelli and his retinue left Washington in May 1806 and traveled up the East Coast to Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston, raising many eyebrows along the way. The ambassador sailed home from Boston in September.
When Jefferson received “an uncommonly friendly letter from the Bey” dated Feb. 27, 1807, he concluded that the ambassador’s report had been accepted favorably in Tunis.
While Mellimelli’s visit did pique cross-cultural curiosity and avert the immediate threat of war with Tunis, cultural differences would continue to intrude upon the relationship between the United States and the Barbary world.

Just another example of the revision of US history that the Democrats would love to shove down our collective throats.
This management team is totally devoid of common sense, and will stoop to any alteration of historical fact to support an unsupportable position. As with the building in NYC for the Islamic Center.
No past President in his right mind would support building a manifestation of insult directed at the US people by a fanatical religious group. In fact no past President would perm More..
