A 9-year-old boy has died in hospital after accidentally hanging himself in a tragic prank.

Tyler James Wade was rushed to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma after friends found him hanging from a tree by a scarf.

An investigation by police found he had been playing with friends, who had gone inside one of their houses before the incident.

When they returned outside, he was caught up in the scarf.

Kitsap County Sheriff's Office spokesman Scott Wilson told the Kitsap Sun: 'The youngster appears to have been engaged in trying to stage a prank.

'It was an unintended accident.'

The youngster had been with his friends on October 16 when the accident happened and he died three days later in hospital.

Tyler's former school, Sidney Glen Elementary, is staging a memorial service on Saturday.

Principal Jason Shdo described him as having an 'engaging, creative' personality.


He told the newspaper: 'He had a twinkle in his eyes. He was a little bit of a jokester.


'He was very affectionate, with a soft heart.'


Family friends have been staging fundraisers to help pay medical and burial expenses.
