Jimmy Carter, the former US president, has warned that America is losing its moral authority on human rights by engaging in targeted assassinations, including drone attacks.
Mr Carter charged that US counterterrorism police was in violation of 10 of the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in an opinion piece in The New York Times.
"Revelations that top officials are targeting people to be assassinated abroad, including American citizens, are only the most recent, disturbing proof of how far our nation's violation of human rights has extended," he said.
Mr Carter, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work in resolving conflicts since leaving office in 1980, is credited with having made human rights a central theme of US foreign policy.
The former president warned that the United States is abandoning its role as the global champion of human rights.
"At a time when popular revolutions are sweeping the globe, the United States should be strengthening, not weakening, basic rules of law and principles of justice enumerated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights," he wrote.
"But instead of making the world safer, America's violation of international human rights abets our enemies and alienates our friends."
Among the abuses Mr Carter cited were drone attacks that kill civilians, targeted assassinations of American citizens, powers to indefinitely detain terror suspects, the use of torture to obtain confessions and privacy violations through warrantless wiretapping and electronic data mining.
"This development began after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and has been sanctioned and escalated by bipartisan executive and legislative actions, without dissent from the general public.
"As a result, our country can no longer speak with moral authority on these critical issues," he said.
"While the country has made mistakes in the past, the widespread abuse of human rights over the last decade has been a dramatic change from the past," he said.
Mr Carter was particularly scathing about the campaign of drone attacks on suspected al-Qaeda operatives, begun under the administration of George W. Bush and intensified since President Barack Obama took office.
"Despite an arbitrary rule that any man killed by drones is declared an enemy terrorist, the death of nearby innocent women and children is accepted as inevitable," he wrote.
"After more than 30 air strikes on civilian homes this year in Afghanistan, President Hamid Karzai has demanded that such attacks end, but the practice continues in areas of Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen that are not in any war zone.
"We don't know how many hundreds of innocent civilians have been killed in these attacks, each one approved by the highest authorities in Washington. This would have been unthinkable in previous times."
Citing top military and intelligence officials, Carter said the escalation of drone attacks has "turned aggrieved families toward terrorist organisations, aroused civilian populations against us and permitted repressive governments to cite such actions to justify their own despotic behaviour."----

This is coming from one of the worse presidents the United States has ever seen. The only good thing he has ever done is "Habitat for Humanity" and I respect him for that. But in matters of foreign policy, he needs to step away. If it werent for the election of Ronald Reagan, the year long hostage crisis in Iran would have gone on far longer. Iran knew how weak Carter was.

@ArrestU Yeah, never mind Iran - Contra. They let the hostages go because they were "scared" of Ronald. LOL.

@picklethepug
Can you explain why the hostages were let go once Reagan took office? Lets see you do that. Because I remember quite vividly that Carter failed at every road.

@ArrestU Better yet, why don't YOU explain why the hostages were let go 20 minutes after Reagan's inauguration? Did he make a threatening phone call to the Ayatollah as he was walking down the capital steps? Or was there some sort of deal struck between Reagan's cronies and the Iranian government before the election as the President of Iran at the time claimed? And if they were scared of Reagan, why the fuck did they participate in a secret arms deals with his administration? You need to d More..

@ArrestU "The Iranian government waited to officially release the Americans until Carter had left the presidency as a final insult to Carter, whom they despised. They believed Carter had betrayed the Iranian revolution by allowing the self-exiled Shah to receive medical attention in the United States and then had threatened their new government by attempting, unsuccessfully, to use military force in April 1980 to free the hostages."
"By doing this, Iran thought they were showing More..

@picklethepug: I’ve actually worked with Habitat for Humanity, have you ass hole? I have NO PROBLEM with affordable housing going to AMERICANS and veterans in particular but here in the South West politics give some people who are not here legally front of the line status. But you wouldn’t know how things work because your head is in the sand (or up your ass).

@fotoman4u2 Fuck yourself, asshole. Time to get a fucking brain and replace the batteries in your sarcasm detector you ignorant turd. It was an extremely sarcastic reply to Moore Slayer's comment that Jimmy Carter only builds houses for illegal aliens. My link points to a story about homes they've built for wounded veterans. But I guess that's something only a Jew hating communist like Carter would do, eh?

He should count his blessings and send Barrack Obama a thank you card for taking him out of the official title of "Worst American President".
