Humanity lost as much with his passing as one loses when flushing the toilet. Good riddance.

  • I am of Hitchens' way of thinking although I do believe there is some positive value to religion. I think this is an aspect of religion that Hitchens intentionally overlooks or dismisses (i.e., charity of spirit, etc.). That said, the end result is that religion has done more harm than good.

Humans, as a species, are inherently generous and charitable. It is a survival necessity to keep the community vibrant. Hitchens does not dismiss this, but embraces this.

His argument is that false beliefs have polluted simple and logical reasoning that have corrupted society.

This is the same filth that religious people constantly pour out: the fact that religious people have more morals. It is false. Religion does NOT give any more morality to the individual. Instead it robs him of the capacity for introspection.

So the challenge Hitchens has put forward remains unbroken: Name a moral action or thing said by a religious person that could NOT have been made/said by an atheist = you will not find any. Name a immoral action or thing said by a person because of More..

First, I wasn't making an argument.

Second, anyone who ends with "Your argument is null" already deserves 5 wanker points.

    • @USA1 Good use of the word "wanker". Is it catching on over your side of the pond?

  • One of the flag bearers for atheism, now departed. Don't know who will fill the gap as he will be a hard act to follow. Bye Hitch.

  • Did I miss the section on the condemnation of Stalin and Mao and the other atheist regimes responsible for the deaths of millions?

  • Dictators, in the name of secular humanism, have killed scores of millions of people throughout history! Hitchens had a big problem with the Judeo-Christian stance on homosexuality and since he was compelled to commit such acts, started his defiance using "all" religions as a smokescreen.

  • I might also add his pettiness about Mother Theresa. He didn't like the fact that she took money from dictators to feed impoverished people. How dare she?!

  • the bolsheviks were secular and fervently anti religion. they murdered 50 million russians and eastern europeans. as an atheist myself it is annoying to watch militant atheists act in the same way as religious fanatics.

Just because a carp is a fish doesn't mean all fish are therefore carp, brother.

He wasn't talking about them. He was talking about German and Japanese fascism.

  • Since so many people regret his passing, i cant judge anything by the video because i missed it all. He might turn out to be the first internet author to win a nobel prize post-homuniosuteley (SP). does anybody have a book title list.

What's the penalty for illicit hooch consumption in Iran these days? Do they stone you, hang you, or just cut off your pouring hand?
