Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has begun a tour of Lebanon that will take him within a few kilometres of the Israeli border.

It is Mr Ahmadinejad's first official visit to Lebanon since he took the presidency five years ago.

Thousands of Shiite Muslims, most of them supporters of militant group Hezbollah, have turned out to greet him.

Hezbollah receives Iran's financial support and shares its hatred of Israel.

But many other Lebanese - Christians, Sunni Muslims and Druze - have expressed concern at the visit and Iran's growing influence in their country.

Today the Iranian leader will visit Hezbollah's stronghold in southern Lebanon, including villages along the border which were bombed by Israel in 2006.

    • Israel is a country, not a religion doofus, and I don't think they pretended to have the authority to give or not give permission. That's just your silly childish imagination getting away from you.

And, you can't make friends with the death-cult, unlike modern civilized Israel that actually contributes to the world.

    • And we're happy to support Israel. Western civilization in the land of decapitations is something we should all get behind.

You give your money to buy child sized suicide vests if you want. We don't need your permission to give foreign aid to Israel or anybody else. Bummer...

    • Hm, a visit by any U.S. politician to Israel isn't automatically seen as a sign of an impending conflict, now is it?
Both sides have allies, both sides are visited by representatives of their allied nations. I don't see any connection to that being the start of some countdown.

    • Hm, but the Israeli side hasn't exactly used very peacefull terms either. Lotsa rattling of sabres, lotsa talk of the Israeli airforce attacking Iran.

No, they haven't talked of the "annihilation of Iran", but of everything short of that.

  • ahamdinejad is an illiterate idiot. i just hope he doesnt ruin things for lebenon or the peace process..

the element of hisblolla's presence will keep the israelis at a check point to a certain extend during the peace talk however.
