TWO teenage thugs were today behind bars for this sickening stab attack on a defenceless man in the heart of Birmingham city centre.
The 17-year-old girl stabbed a knife into her helpless victim’s back as she and an accomplice tried to rob him in full view of the city’s high-tech CCTV cameras.
The vicious muggers left him slumped on the ground and ran off empty-handed. Minutes later, they threatened a woman at knifepoint and stole her handbag and mobile phone.
But the pair – who can’t be named for legal reasons – are now off the streets after being jailed by Judge Howard Morrison QC.
Today, their 28-year-old victim, who still suffers flashbacks, said he hoped the sentences would serve as a warning about the devastating effects of knife crime.
The insurance worker, who asked not to be named, said: “As soon as I saw the knife I thought I was going to die.
“People carrying knives just don’t realise the consequences. They don’t see the damage they can cause to their victims and to their own lives as well.
“I was one of the lucky ones, I was able to come away from it relatively unscathed in the end.”
The man was heading home after a night out with pals when he was confronted by the pair in Cherry Street, near St Philip’s Cathedral, who demanded cigarettes.
He said: “I don’t smoke so I said I couldn’t help them but they started getting in my face. Then I saw the knife. It was the scariest moment of my life.
“I was very lucky, had the wound to my back been any deeper it would’ve hit my kidney. A little bit to the right it would’ve hit my spine and I’d have ended up in a wheelchair.”
Both defendants admitted charges of robbery, attempted robbery and possessing a bladed article. The female defendant also pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and the male to wounding.
Judge Howard Morrison QC sentenced her to five years detention and the male to three years and 10 months detention at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday.
He said that if they had been over 21 they would have received much heavier sentences.
However, he said he had taken into account reports which indicated it was unlikely the female would do anything like this again.
PC Dave Bunce, from Steelhouse Lane CID, said: “Anybody who commits crime in the city centre is going to be brought to justice and, as this case shows, receive substantial sentences.
“The two individuals are teenagers. They are going to be adults when they come out.”
