5 Real Life Soldiers Who Make Rambo Look Like a Pussy... By Marc Russel

We all understand that action movies are cheesy escapism. After all, could one commando really take out a whole compound full of bad guys?

Actually, yes. It turns out the history books are full of stories of soldiers doing things so badass they'd hesitate to put them into a film for fear of killing the realism. Like these five, for example.

Simo Hayha had a fairly boring life in Finland. He served his one mandatory year in the military, and then became a farmer. But when the Soviet Union invaded his homeland in 1939, he decided he wanted to help his country.

Since the majority of fighting took place in the forest, he figured the best way to stop the invasion was to grab his trusty rifle, a couple of cans of food and hide in a tree all day shooting Russians. In six feet of snow. And 20-40 degrees below z

  • "and killed the four heavily-armed men inside with his bare hands."

In reference to "Yogendra Singh Yadav", although he was bad ass and did pretty much everything you said in the paragraphs describing his actions, the above sentence is exaggerated.

What actually happened is that he charged the bunker with TWO fellow colleagues and killed THREE enemy soldiers by way of hand to hand combat.

Your article about Jack Churchill is missing a lot of information as well. One impor More..

  • Amazing heros !

There's another one to add to the list, the New Zealander Charles Upham, the only fighting soldier in the world to recieve a double Victoria Cross (the other 2 who did were medics).

Here's an extract of just one of his feats from http://www.nzedge.com/heroes/upham.html:

Upham was renowned for combining controlled courage with quick-thinking resourcefulness. While most medals for bravery are awarded for a single act, Upham%u2019s first citation was for nine days of skill, More..

  • Everyone of these great men have had movies made of their heroic exploits. Audie Murphy even played himself in his movie, based on his biography. Sgt. Yorks home is now a museum in Valley of the Fork of the Three Wolfs, near pall mall Tn.

  • Also google Shugart and Gordon some time. They were portrayed in a little movie called Black Hawk Down. They were the two snipers who volunteered to secure the second crash site.

  • Yes, that's what I call heroism.
Today people are heroes because they crash a car and get captured (e.g. Jessica Lynch) or get shot by their comrades (e.g. Pat Tilmann).

    • "Sergeant First Class Paul R. Smith distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action with an armed enemy near Baghdad International Airport, Baghdad, Iraq on 4 April 2003. On that day, Sergeant First Class Smith was engaged in the construction of a prisoner of war holding area when his Task Force was violently attacked by a company-sized enemy force. Realizing the vulnerability of over 100 fellow soldiers, Sergeant First Class Smith quic More..

    • Which part of my comment isn't true? And if it is true, why does it cause offence?
Tillman was killed by friendly fire, Lynch crashed and was unconscious when captured. Where's teh heroism that justifies their medals.
Paul R. Smith is another case.

  • i just can't help when reading this, to think ALOT of it is extremely exaggerated, like the german officer asking if the single soldier was english, and then surrendering all of the germans? come on? seriously?

    • @Statutory Ape there are a lot crazier stories bud, one comes to mind when 3 americans in a jeep went ahead of the battalion for recon purposes and ran into an enormous column of germans and they had to think of something quick so when they pulled up to the germans superiors he told them they were there to accept a german surrender and the germans looked at them like they were stupid for a seconds then the american said look we have you surounded so you can either surrender to us or turn around More..
