  • The decline in family medicine practitioners started long before the Affordable Care Act was even thought of. A large part of the reason is healthy adults don't "go to the family doctor" for regular checkups like they used to. Children go to Pediatric specialists, women go to an Ob. GYN specialist, and old people go to geriatric specialists for their specific ailments. Another reason is coverage and cost. There are millions of uninsured people that don't go to the doctor at all until More..

    • @picklethepug Pickle, they said the "doctor shortage will get worse." They did not state it would start to happen.
Further, what you seem to overlook is seniors use medical services more than others. They are mostly covered by Medicare. Obamacare raids Medicare and lowers doctor's rates for Medicare payments. Those doctors are leaving and/or not accepting patients. This is not a phantom argument pickle, it is real. And if we take even more money from those doctors, they will no More..

You're right-- I was speaking to the numerous comments that were attributing this issue directly to "Obamacare," including yours, because likewise, the cut to doctor's payments for medicare is also largely unrelated to "Obamacare"-- it's a Congressional budget issue that's been going on since 2001! But don't believe me, read what the AMA has to say about it!:

real cost of healthcare is insurance
which is driven by expensive frivolous lawsuits
which are driven by lawyers and a few people..

    unfortunately, mistakes happen

    • @heydoin The "frivolous lawsuit" meme is phoney. It is a lie created by the insurance industry. (Yes, there are a few meritless suits - that's not the issue as you know with your allegation "frivolous" suits are a "real cost" in healthcare.)
Here's why, in a nutshell. Lawyers taking cases on contingency pay the costs up front too, then recoup costs from the recovery. A lawyer cannot fund "frivolous" suits or withstand the losses that would result from More..

    • @trialdog Both sides drive up the cost.
Still going to say a few (LIKELY more than a few) successful million dollar lawsuits make a BIG difference to the insurance companies bottom line.

Insurance companies cant make more than 20% profits. Its to the insurance companies advantage to drive costs up. Thus, insurance companies make more money on higher cost basis.

From what I see, Caribbean medical schools have started putting out HUGE amounts of medical students, the number of physicians' assistants and nurse practitioners is also increasing dramatically to meet the demand. If you go to the hospital, you may be seeing more of these health specialists but that is the price we pay.

    • @stop the lies on LL I think the difference is the quality of the care. Americans are used to the best healthcare in the world and don't want to see that quality diminish. But to me the biggest reason obummercare is disliked is that nobody wants the gov to get between them and their doctor. You are right when you say "the US is different than Europe"

I have lived both in the US and in Europe and have been to hospitals in both. The quality is good in the US, but it is here too. The main difference I found was the price. But of course it's paid through taxes here in the end. But I'm willing to pay the taxes so that everyone gets access, and so do most Europeans. But I also know people like to have as little gov involvement as possible in the US. It's all good. That's what democracy is for.
