Just a pic of my Hop vines and my flag. Taken from my pool. I was in a spiritual mood... I brew beer and use my own, home-grown hops. I love this country...

Time to harvest soon... Maybe a nice Kolsch, or light pilsner... or maybe even a Blue Moon clone

  • Now that's dedication! Not only brewing your own but growing your own hops! Awesome! I've just started brewing. Yep with the ole ginger beer! Bloody nice! 3 weeks down & about 7%. Next is gorse flower wine :) http://www.rivercottage.net/recipes/hughs-gorseflower-wine/

Have you tried brewing any root beer? I also want to try my hand at brewing some of that, but the real stuff is first on the list. Also what is that in your avatar is that from a movie or something?

Well, not brewing it per say, but we made a small pot of it. We used fresh Sassafras Tree roots and sugar and some other spices. It tasted really good! I was gonna make a "hard" root beer, but then after some research, found out that the roots contain Safrole oil, which is considered to be a weak carcinogen, so I put that project on hold.

Warning - once you start brewing, you will become completely addicted to it. It's so much fun.

Here's my beer fridge. I keg and force c More..

LOL thanks stirgy I will definitely checkout beeradvocate, actually I think I used to go on that site and read their beer reviews but that was about 7-8 years ago, I had forgotten about them actually. Your keggerator looks pretty sweet that's something that has to be pretty awesome your own homemade beer on tap! Yeah I think this fall I'm going to try my hand at making some beer, I will let you know how it goes.

  • I just drank a PBR. Cheap, good American made beer. I always support that.
    You didn't give enough choices.

  • A friend got me into brewing one time. It was fun and interesting, reminded me of high School Chemistry with all the contraptions and what not. I DEFINITELY did not grow my own Hops though, big props to ya! But at the end I realized I never would have a collection as I'd drink it all :)

Realized just buying a 6 pack of weird beers here n there at the BevMo was just easier lol.

  • I still have 2 Carlton Colds in the bar fridge from before Christmas,I'm sick of the mass-produced shit. Just can't bring myself to drink them.
Come to think of it I haven't had a sip of anything since March & also still have a bottle of Dewers Scotch on the shelf unopened.
If I knew how to brew I'd probably have some sitting there maturing? for the hot summer soon to arrive here.. Is that viable? Brewing & leaving them to sit there till summer or does it deteriorate past a certain age l More..

    • @DJCool - well, Ales are easier to brew, but will spoil - the stronger you make it, the more hops you use (they deter bacteria) and if sanitation isn't perfect - can all lead to early spoilage. I have strong fruit ales in the fridge from 5 years ago and they are still fine. I made a few hard ciders and they kept getting crisper and tastier month after month. Lagers should be cold stored for a few months then drunk.

I dont even taste beer anymore.
I just get it in me.
I dont mind the mass made stuff....they know what they're doing when it comes to brewing and it does what beer is made to do.

    • @DJCool - stout is probably the easiest to brew. Roasted & black patent malts...

  • I keep saying I'm going to buy one of those kits and brew myself some beer but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Maybe before football season I'll get off my butt and get all the stuff together. The hardest part is just getting everything all sterilized and clean imo
