Egyptian Islamic theologian, Yusuf al-Qaradawi, who stars in Al Jazeera's programme, al-Sharīʿa wa al-Ḥayāh ("Shariah and Life") that has an estimated audience of 60 million viewers worldwide, has issued a fatwa (religious edict) that requires all Muslims to kill anyone that supports the Syrian government in its fight against the "Free Syrian Army" (FSA) terrorists. His statement came in response to some viewers' questions related to whether it is permissible to target pro-government people and kill Syrian Army soldiers, knowing that some of them might defect. His response made no differentiation between military personnel, civilians, and others, as all - according to him - are as guilty as the government and deserve the same sentence it should receive. His statement is nothing short of a call for genocide with the full sponsorship of the state of Qatar.
Al-Qaradawi has long had a prominent role within the intellectual leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood. Some of al-Qaradawi's views have been controversial in the West. He was refused an entry visa to the United Kingdom in 2008, and barred from entering France in 2012.
