Ukraine is marking a day of national mourning as the burials begin of 80 miners killed in a methane explosion. A rescue operation to try to save 20 men still believed trapped underground is continuing. Miners waiting to start their shift in another part of the same pit were reassured by President Viktor Yushchenko that he would find out what happened. He told them that their efforts were vitally important to a country which relies on coal for its energy supply.
Sunday's accident at the Zasiadko mine is set to make history. It's the worst in the eastern industrial region of Donetsk for seven years, and if those still missing are among the victims it would be the worst since Ukrainian independence in 1991.
President Viktor Yushchenko visited some of the dozens of shocked survivors still in hospital. Deadly explosions at the Zasiadko mine are not uncommon but this time almost an entire shift died .
