  • I like camping stoves as much as the next guy, but is the skinny jeans wearing hipster really the best person to promote this product? Also, do we really need to charge phones and entertainment devices when we go camping? Isn't the point to get away from all of this stuff and enjoy the outdoors? Just a thought ;)

    Cool product non-the-less.

    • @PyneOil True camping is too appreciate the outdoors. I agree with you there. When I go, I take as little "modern" equipment there is to truly take in the experience. My thought are if you need those things, camp out in your backyard HOWEVER I would take this contraption. A cell phone is always a great idea for emergencies

    • @NeRdALeRt -Where I camp there is no signal, regardless of your provider. Believe it or not, there was a time when nobody had cell phones and we had to rely on good judgement and skill to keep ourselves alive and make it back from the wilderness. I miss those days ;)

  • This would be excellent for a long camping trip if you wanna keep your phone running. Two problems I see though, if you're on an adventure deep into the wilderness there may be bad or no reception with a cellphone but that I do not know and also, the fact she said don't get water inside the stove scares me, if you were reliant on that stove it would be very very bad if you got it wet crossing a stream or something. I like the idea but I think they should waterproof the fucking hell out of it and More..

    • @lucidx1 you always need a charged phone when out in the woods...when the maniac woodsman freak starts chasing you (yo know..the one in every movie) ..at some point you will get reception. Usually right before your about to get eaten..you hould get one bar showing up...just enough time to put a 911 call in, and have the cops show up for dinner.

  • When your pot boils over your electronic module goes fizz. Also it's much easier to take a foldable solar panel with you if your geeky enough to bring electronics to a camp site. This stove requires that you find small sticks and constantly feed it. It's neat, but not practical for real campers. If I have to use matches and kindling I am going to get some rocks or dig a pit and make a real fire.

Like most consumer items it's all wow appeal with no real world use.

    • @yoshiegg2000 I think it is meant for a single camper and not a family. To avoid water overflow, don't fill pot to the top. Common sense. As for wood, if you buy a long burning log and cut it up before leaving for your trip, you won't need to keep it fed. It is very practical on alot of levels.

  • The flat side of the "power module" is the hot side of a thermal electric generator (TEG). The modules are easily available on sites like e-Bay if you want details.

This is one of the most creative commercial applications of a TEG module I've seen.

    Kudos!

  • OK. Tell me how the power module gets charged by the fire.

    Inquiring minds need to know.

    • @Arizona_Patriot Not sure if this is what you were looking for but

So how does this all work? Why is there a battery in here?

The BioLite CampStove uses a small internal fan to create air flow which in conjunction with our uniquely designed fuel chamber creates a highly efficient fire. The heat generated by the fire is converted into electricity in our Power Module- that electricity then a) recharges the lithium battery used to power the fan and b) is sent to the USB output to charge small dev More..

    • @YesImadick

Sort of. I just want to know how the heat is converted into electricity.

I found this article from MIT to be of no help.

  • I thought the point of camping was to get away from technology and modern lifestyle?

    Posted Jul-18-2012 By

    • @WolfBite120
That depends, people generally pick what they want to bring with them on an adventure. Some people might even take a camper with a god damned TV when they go camping, some people might take their phone for safety and some more experienced people might take nothing. It's all about preference, there is no right or wrong way to go camping.

  • its always nice during demos but when u actually get one nothing works ! lol XD well not everything but most of the stuff is like that XD

  • pretty neat, more use as phone charger than a fire starter though.
Find some mushrooms and make tea!

  • If this thing is not waterproof it would be better to make fire with it only if you need to charge a battery but for cooking, better have something else. There are some excellent designs out there esp. the ones called "rocket stove" http://wildstoves.co.uk/
    http://bushbuddy.ca/order.html
If you can't feed the fire without removing the pot that's poor design. Good designs allow to feed wood from the bottom, the hole also creates a draft. Their exclusive design with the fan is a gimmick More..

    • @khamomil What about long burning wood chips for cooking? Buy a log before your trip and cut it up into a small bundle? That could work possibly

  • uhh, what? i'm wondering how many trees you'd have to burn in order to fully charge an iphone. While the idea is pretty cool, my guess is that its not very efficient, and definitely isn't going to be in any back packer or survivalist kit. Way WAY WAY too big for that. But urban hipsters will snap these things up faster than you can plug in an iphone i'm guessing.

    • @Loomfries -Really? That's what you came up with? Not so clever... oh and LIBERAL ;)

      Posted Jul-18-2012 By

    • @PyneOil

It works by renewed energy, name says "Bio" in it which means educated people worked on it, maybe Obama. Boy in thick black glasses and hair in his face is using it, and there's an iPhone in the video. I'll have none of this Librul nonsense.

Rather use my leaded gas burning stove. And forgit matches, I use my 12 Gauge shotgun to start my fire. Yaayhaw.
