In yet another case of a video gone viral, a monk on Mount Emei was in
the middle of his speech on the beauty of life when two cheeky monkeys
decided to steal the limelight by climbing on him as if he were a tree.
The first monkey started the harassment by tugging on the monk's
sleeve with one paw. When the monk ignored it, the persistent monkey
tugged harder with both its paws, until another monkey joined in the
fun.
The mischievous pals then jumped on the monk's shoulders and head,
climbing over his face and tugging at his robe as he carried on with his
speech, trying to not be distracted.
Camera crew tried to lure the attention seeking primates away with
food but this did not manage to work too well as they soon resumed their
harassment tactics in order to obtain more food.
The four-minute video clip has gone viral on Chinese social networking sites since it was uploaded.
Some Weibo users found the Venerable's calm and helpless reaction to the monkeys extremely funny.
One
of the more popular jokes compares him to monk Xuanzang, a character
from the Chinese novel Journey to the West who travelled to India with
the Monkey King Sun Wu Kong. The video has been circulated with a famous
quote from the book where Xuanzang helplessly told the playful Monkey
King: "Wu Kong, you are being naughty again".
