Shop owner who beat 2 customers also blew his cover: ex-mafia hitman

"On Jan. 23, [2009] two customers came into Goomba's to complain about a calzone they had purchased and demanded their money back. Milano instead pulled out a Luger 9 mm handgun and screeched: "I'm going to kill you! You're in my place," according to a police report filed by the Flagler County Sheriff's office. One victim was beaten with a pistol. Another wrestled it away from the burly pizzeria owner.

The Sheriff's office released a security surveillance video showing Milano. The video was posted on YouTube where it was viewed by a NYPD detective assigned to the organized crime control bureau.

"That's Crazy Joe alright," the detective said on the condition of anonymity. "These guys never change. We give them a second chance. Joey should have just disappeared. But, these guys never do."

After the Jan. 23 incident, Milano was arrested at his parents' home and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. On Friday night, Milano "aka Joey Calco" was arrested as a felon in posession of a firearm. He was released with a $200,000 bond. His parents are Guiseppa and Calogero Calco.

Calco and his family lived on Bath Avenue in Brooklyn. They immigrated to the neighborhood from the south of Italy and he quickly became a rising star in the Bonanno crime family as a "zip" - hired guns who are trusted because they are full-blooded Italians. Calco, who had a "shooter tattoo" with the number 7 on his ankle signifying the number of bodies he had dropped for the Mob fled the country for Italy after he murdered Gulino and another Brooklyn man who was rumored to have cooperated with police, Jack Cherin.

He was captured trying to sneak back into the country from Canada in 1999. He had used a knife to try to gouge the incriminating ink from his ankle, but he only managed to peel off the top layers of his skin. He quickly "went bad" and began cooperating against his Bonanno family Mafia chieftain, consiglieri Anthony Spero. His cooperation earned him a nine-year sentence. He had already been in for six and came out in two.

"If you give me another chance Judge, I won't let this court down and I won't let you down, your Honor," Calco told federal Judge Edward R. Korman at his sentencing.

He opened Goomba's Pizza in 2006, the same year a social security card was issued for Joseph Milano with the same birth date as Calco's. Within months of opening, he was accused of sexually harrassing a teenage girl who worked in the pizzeria and logged a battery arrest for slapping another teen employee.

Richie Capie, 35, one of the men Milano/Calco attacked, said he has heard the news that he was brutalized by a former mob hitman hidden in Florida by the government. "Now that's in the back of my mind - the guy's a killer."

Calco is one of a half-dozen Bath Avenue Crew members who testified against their criminal compatriots in the mob and were relocated with federal taxpayer dollars.

Another is former South Beach nightclub king Chris "The Binger" Paciello who made a name for himself as an entertainment czar in Miami by dating Madonna and supermodel Nikki Taylor. He spent six years in a rat jail for the 1993 murder of a Staten Island housewife, Judy Shemtov. Paciello provided critical information to the government that sent Colombo crime family boss Alphonse "Allie Boy" Persico to jail.

Paciello, whose real name is Christian Ludgwigsen, has since left the witness protection program and has hit the Los Angeles party scene. Last August, Paciello was arrested for beating a man he got into a beef with at a nightclub – an attack that was also caught on surveillance cameras from a Sunset Blvd. Paciello is also a partner in a Hollywood pizzeria called Cristoni and is trying to open two other restaurants. He is not trying to hide.
He is looking for "friends" on Facebook under the name Chris Paciello.

Calco's real identity was revealed today by Heather Scofield, a reporter at the Daytona Beach News-Journal."
