Richard Todd best known for his classic war movies The Dam Busters and The Longest Day,has died aged 90 from cancer.
Born in Dublin in 1919 Todd was one of the first British soldiers to parachute in to france on D Day.As a captain in the Parachute regiment his battalion were the reinforcements for the glider troops who landed and took Pegasus bridge a vital road link for allied tanks to break in to Normandy .He met up with Major John Howard who he would later play the role of in the Longest Day.They held the bridge for 24 hours under constant fierce german counter attacks .
The actor whose full name was Richard Andrew Palethorp-Todd began acting in 1937.With the outbreak of world war 2 the volunteered for duty,gaining a commision in 1941 and joined the parachute regiment.
He was nominated for the best actor oscar in 1950 for his role opposite future US president Ronald Reagan in the H
