KABUL, Afghanistan - U.S.-led coalition and Afghan forces killed a senior militant commander responsible for roadside bombings and other attacks in eastern Afghanistan, the coalition said Friday.
The joint forces killed Mullah Sangeen during an operation Tuesday, the statement said. The coalition did not disclose the exact location of the operation.
Sangeen was second-in-comand to Siraj Haqqani, a militant leader in eastern Afghanistan.
The U.S. government had offered $20,000 for information leading to Sangeen's capture or killing. It was not immediately clear whether the reward helped in locating and killing him.
Haqqani is the son of veteran warlord Jalalludin Haqqani and is believed to have connections with al-Qaida. He has a $200,000 bounty on his head.
In October, the U.S. Army put up billboards and posters throughout eastern Afghanistan with names and pictures of 12 militants accused of attacks and bombings. It also offered rewards ranging from $20,000 to $200,000 for information leading to their killing or capture.
