DOG OWNER TO SUE POLICE AFTER OFFICER SHOOTS PET

PITTSBURGH -- A pet owner said an officer shot her dog and she wants the department to pay for her veterinary bills.
Aliquippa
resident Angel Hankinson said a police officer shot her dog fired three
times at her yard. She said the veterinarian surgically pulled pieces
of bullet from her dog's jaw.
Hankinson said her dog did not charge at the officer.
"She was walking, trotting and barking. That's all she did," the dog owner said.
Hankinson said her trust has been violated and that the police department owed her thousands of dollars.
"I'm ashamed to live in this town under that police force," Hankinson said.
Aliquippa police said officers were called Friday night for reports of smoke.
Hankinson
said the smoke was from a small fire pit in her backyard. She said
officers snuck up on her property without identifying themselves, and
fired three shots when her dog approached them.
"That could've been a child you're shooting in the dark," Hankinson said.
Police said the officer felt threatened by the dog and fired for his own safety.
Hankinson
said, however, that it was reckless behavior that other residents
should never have to endure. She said she plans to sue for the more than
$2,000 in medical bills she's paid so far.
"These officers of the law are supposed to trust and protect us, but they're running around shooting stupidly," Hankinson said.
The
Aliquippa police chief said they are investigating the shooting, but
has indicated that the officer was acting in self-defense - 19 Mar 2012.

  • lesson to all..

The police chief will never admit fault.. too much "easy" liability

Only under oath in front of a judge will he HAVE to say the truth.

    otherwise cover up as usual

  • So, I'm sitting in my back yard with my family, enjoying a fire, when my dog barks at someone who's sneaking across my property in the dark. Dog did his job, but me? I see someone in the shadows fire at my dog, I'm immediately opening fire in return, because I don't know if they're going to shoot me next or not. I have NO idea who's on my property, but they just fired a weapon in my direction.

At no point was their presence announced as police. Homeowner had every right to defend herself wi More..

    • @JohnnyTekno Think you have to give a warning to the trespasser(s). THEN if no one responds, fire away.

  • Why are police responding to a report of smoke?
Isn't that the Fire Department's responsibility?

  • Jeeze, light a fire in your yard, have a cop show up uninvited and shoot your dog. Fucking assholes.

    • @dorbie Well, its private property. They could sue for alot more.

The police could have been shot too. When you live out in the sticks, and people are mulling around, I know ranchers who fire a shot in the air just to let said person know they have a weapon and are ready to use it.

The fact the police didn't even identify themselves is a HUGE problem. Unfortunately this is how they are trained.

They are sneaking up on people in order to "catch them in the act", rather than protec More..

    • @lexaudio How can you respect the cops when you know the problem with them is in how they are trained and who they are? That makes everything about them bad. At least a bad person can be trained to act like a decent human being, or a good person might resist bad training and still remain a decent human being. The combination of both bad parts, that just breeds some damn Saruman style "Uruk-Hai". Best to be shot on sight, ffs.

  • This is her private property, she never invited the police onto her property and they had NO reason to be on her property because NO CRIME had been committed.

    I do hope she sues.

Yet again, this is also another classic example of how difficult it is to actually kill a person with a pistol. It is extremely rare for people to actually die from these gun shot wounds. 3 shots didn't kill this dog.

    • @PimeTaradox I would just love to link to you, a classic clip of the NZ police trying to shoot a dog. There are about 3 or 4 of them firing all over the place and not one of them could hit it. If you come across it by any chance, please send me the link.

    • @Rebel_Radius I've seen the same with a fox and a whole line of shotguns with a half dozen people shooting at it.

    • @Rebel_Radius they can't be THAT hard to hit.. youtube "Officer tases Rottweiler" this BIG (like 6-4) cop is charged at, by a Huge Rotty, who takes a kick at it as he stumbles backward, THEN whips his taser out and nails it perfectly.. nice scene of the dog on its back, legs stiff in the air, THEN it gets up and takes off, howling.

    • @dorbie People subconsciously pull their weapon at the last second when they don't mean to shoot what they're shooting.

  • every dog checks out whos on the property- and barks - this dog obviously does not look
aggressive in any way - police lies

  • this always annoys me because I know if anyone comes on my property my dog is going to run up to it, not a vicious bone in his body, but he would still run up to someone who walked onto my property but just to greet, probably the same thing this dog was doing. Too many times cops shoot dogs for no reason

  • When you've seen a security guard (almost a cop) pepper spray a squirrel, you don't get surprised anymore. The mentality is, "I'm in charge, and anyone that thinks different is dead meat, because I'm real tough and cool." And yet they act out of fear almost 100% of the time. Only when the victim is helpless do they feel tough again, so they HAVE TO make them helpless to save their ego.

  • Good. Hope she wins. Investigating Smoke from a firepit in someones yard is not a "guns drawn" situation.

  • Poor dog, give me a break, that's the dog job, to protect the house.
No wonder how many persons, now kill police officers after they shot the family dog!

  • I used to know an Alliquippa cop; gung ho arrogant captain american types who viewed everyone and everything as needing to be beaten back into compliance.

And if you think they can't shoot, you should see them drive; most of their budget must go to replace wrecked police cars.
