Alawites are more of an ethnic group rather than a religion.
They are not recognized as Muslims by majority of muslims due to the fact that they beleive that prophet Muhammad, Imam Ali and Nusayri were the impersonations of God on earth. Basically christinanity just with Arab/Muslim figures.
