  • Britain was ready to break the sound barrier until the project was scraped and gave to America. Britain was also well advanced with rocket technology to launch satellites with the Black night rocket. That too was scraped. Sometimes I wonder who's side our leaders where on in those days.

  • As a kid,i used to watch the Lightnings taking off from the nearby airbase and always amazed me with how they went vertical moments after leaving the tarmac.Seeing them on film is nothing compared to in the flesh because noise wise they roared like no other plane. As an interceptor i dont think anything even now could come close to their abilities, but like the chap said you could empty the tank in 15 minutes so it had its limitations.I still think it was a damn ugly plane though even in shiny shi More..

    • @Zeb Sometimes ugly is beautiful.

It still holds a few records today I think, but that stat about breaking the sound barrier in vertical flight must have been a wheeze for the pilot.

  • The Lightning was a brutal plane and believe it or not, I have flown in one and will never forget the experience.

  • Great post!
The Electric Lightning was / is one of those planes that manages to look brutal, beautiful and menacing all at the same time ... in flight or on the ground.

So different to the sleek and graceful meteor at the 13min mark

I remember seeing a Lightning at an airshow when I was a kid in about 1968 ... my dad made me an Airfix kit of one and hung it on fishing line from my bedroom ceiling.

    • @riddler11 Yeah that was because it was in the 1950's and 60's you cunt, jesus christ you can't even figure out the decade, bet your going to vote for Romney, go through the history books and see what impact our little country has had on the rest of the world, mostly for the better, sometimes for the worse, have a look at what our country did, not just after your country came in to recent existence, but long before, now you have a nice day, and when you look skyward, and you see jets flying over More..
