Rodney King dead at age 47

Rodney King, whose beating by police in 1992 sparked the LA riots, was found dead in his swimming pool early Sunday, authorities said. He was 47.

Rialto Police Captain Randy Deanda told AFP King was found "unresponsive" at the bottom of his pool and was pronounced dead at a local medical center shortly afterward at 6:11 am (1311 GMT).

Mu editorial

Two things came out of this event: the birth of what I would consider citizen journalism and the previously hidden racism by some police forces. Since this event there have been many changes in how things are done, but IMHO they have not changed much of how people see others. My grandfather lost a business he had owned since the end of World War 2 in the riots and fires, one that he chose not to rebuild because of other things like repeated robberies, lawsuits for ridicules things like a broken zipper and graffitti. His shop here in the Fresno area, boight after he moved his family, is still going strong even 14 years after his death. I'm sorry to see Rodney has passed, I hope he finds the peace he deserves.

  • As the thugs were yelling for PEACE and JUSTICE for RODNEY, they killed 55 of their own people, burned down their neighborhood and looted everything in sight. I don't ever for a second believe they cared about Rodney King.

  • If Trayvon had a father...he would look like Rodney King.

  • No loss at all. He was a thieving, drug addicted, alcoholic who was known for beating women. He put everyone's life in harms way every time he got behind the wheel of a car. Good riddance!

Yeah it's a sickening realization when a no good, repeat criminal becomes a symbol of social martyrdom for a select group. Pathetic.

    • @NameUserNot

It's funny you say this because I was just saying the SAME thing to my wife. Pathetic indeed!

I think it was mainly the media who was responsible for that. It was only exacerbated by the likes of Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Rodney king's lawyers.

  • NOTHING good came from this incident. It was a complete sham and the cops were railroaded because it was an election year. The public was shown only the last portion of the confrontation with King. It was not shown the fact that King struck the officers and violently resisted arrest. The public doesn't understand that King was a VERY big guy who was repeatedly tazed and who kept raising after he was ordered by the police to lay on the ground so he could be cuffed. The public doesn't know that K More..

  • Blacks were so angry at a black getting beaten, they burned and looted stores in....um....well, their own neighborhood.

    Talk about stupid.

  • Its interesting how blacks keep saying they're being mistreated by cops even decades ago, yet in the last 20+ years, what have blacks done to change that? IE have they committed less violence, crime and murder to change police and people's perceptions of many blacks as criminals?

I can understand if 20 years later black crime is way down and police are still profiling them then there is a legitimate argument that they're being mistreated. But this isn't the case is it? 20 years later and its st More..
