Syria - Bombardment of Homs' Khaldiye Neighborhood (4/15/2012)
Is this the most effective way to get rid of a group of "rag tag petty criminals and outlaws" (sayings of Assad, his media machine and his regime)? Or is this the effort to surpress the people from speaking out against the regime?
How accurate is Soviet-era artillery really? And how come are they shooting a shell every 10 seconds? What exactly are they aiming for? It must be something really threathening to the imminent security of the regime judging from the area of effect where these shels randomly fall.
Again the question, is this the most effective way to pursue "criminals"?
Is the level of force proportionate and if yes, could you yourself imagine this in your own city by your own government?

They say that enduring an artillery barrage is one of the most terrifying experiences of warfare.
Also this sort of action by the Ba'ath/Assad seems totally foolish to me - yes it might drive civilians out of an area/keep rebels heads down for a while but in the long run any government that shells its own people like this will instantly lose its popular support. Imagine if your Prime Minister or President started shelling your neighbourhood because there were some armed men there.

16" cruiser guns.. a steel shell packed full of explosives weighing as much as a honda civic, being shot 20 kilometers towards you at over the speed of sound.
Fuck that.
Seems the residents in the cities don't like the FSA because they can be violent and fuck shit up while occupying, then attract fire afterwards.
Country FSA has more support it seems.
Assad needs more choppers to do more accurate attacks but they were stopped..

@Challenge Accepted, it is pretty terrifying, it is like sweet and sour sauce, Every nerve jarring sour explosion you hear, gives a sweet realization that it did not hit you. Do that every day over hours and you got what soldier called in WW1 "shell shock". But I know people that endured months of shelling.

@N4CR well in this case its 122mm Soviet era howitzers and Katuyusha rockets - not cruiser shells - but none the less the experience would be the same!
As for the FSA attracting fire this is only because the SAA seems to have the WW2 era artillery tactic of shelling an urban area where an enemy - might - be! This is probably a reasonable tactic in somewhere like Stalingrad but probably not best used against the financial capital of your own country - which is packed with civilians!!

@Challenge Accepted It is not random, it is very accurate. Syrian artillery is exceptional and drones and reconnaissance planes give exact location and correct fire.

My country hasn't got a horde of pedo goat fuckers, running around with AKs, RPGS, PKMs and brand new chevy SUVs with 30mm cannons.
And shelling is used to soften targets up and to drive them out of their hiding places, so special forces can take them out.
Pretty hard to get heavily armed men out of a building without fucking it up, in case you havn't watched any war footage before. Like this old clip.
