Chevron accused of refusing service to burka clad woman

La-Fleur Mohamed, a Muslim for the past 12 years, says a Chevron employee humiliated her by barring her from a gas station because she wouldn't remove her veil. "You can't come in here dressed like that," Mohamed said the clerk told her inside a station store west of Boca Raton, Florida in October. The clerk allegedly tossed Mohamed's gas money back at her and instructed her to leave.

Nada, it's illegal to discriminate. That's been the law for many a year.

I don't think the clerk was as concerned about her religion as the fact that she is in a disguise that hides her identity. Guess what: Robbers do the same thing.

Anyone - stores, banks, etc. - who is susceptible to being held up shouldn't have to allow someone in a disguise on their premises.

876.12 Wearing mask, hood, or other device on public way.
No person or persons over 16 years of age shall, while wearing any mask, hood, or device whereby any portion of the face is so hidden, concealed, or covered as to conceal the identity of the wearer, enter upon, or be or appear upon any lane, walk, alley, street, road, highway, or other public way in this state.

I'm sure there are exemptions like Halloween etc.

    • @joe prole--Try walking into a bank with a hooded sweatshirt on(hood covering head) and a scarf wrapped around your neck and lower face--I don't care about your religion, your color, your nationality, your sex, you aren't going to get any service from that bank, unless it's an escort service out the door or a bullet to the heart for refusing to unmask yourself, and remember, banks are private businesses.

Actually no they don't have that right. You can't discriminate service based on gender, age, ethnicity, RELIGION, or any other "protected" class under the US Constitution. Some of you guys saying they had the "right" to refuse service to her strictly because she is a Muslim are talking out of your asses, the law does NOT support that viewpoint

    • @2Crazy4U
u can refuse someone if they arent wearing shirt or shoes....its kind of like the "must spend $5 to use debit/credit card" rule some gas stations have up.....which is illegal to refuse them if they spend under $5 and want to use credit cards

    • @Blklight Chevron will say they refused to serve her because she was concealing her Identity to the CCTV which is a risk to the security store... Case closed.

  • Allahu Ackbar.
If I walk into a gas station or a bank with my face covered, my intentions may be suspect. Where the hell in the Quran does it say that a women must be totally covered except for a slit for your eyes? It ask that women dress in a non provocative manner. Denied my religious rights my ass. Is the gas station privately owned? Do the not have the right to deny service to whomever they choose? This political correctness BS has gone way too far.
How would you feel if a bunch of hooded p More..

    • @muhamedtheone Oh come on man, my religion requires bare feet and shirtless with only a loin cloth made of second year wool sheared at midnight on the harvest moon and tassles on my nipples.. Clearly I'm being discriminated and my civil rights are being violated..

Or a bunch of hooded men carrying crosses. No different. That was stopped through the actions of the "good"...and so will this.

  • Being a devout muslim, she really should not have been out without a male escort. If she only would follow islamic law more closely, she could have had the male buy the gas for her. But just like all religions, she only wants to observe what she feels like. You know that Imam was sitting there thinking "shut up woman, how dare you speak".

  • If she doesn't want to take the veil off, she can go somewhere else.

It is unfair to expect everyone to cater to you and your religion. ESPECIALLY if you are in part of the world where majority of the people don't hold your beliefs.

i say the same thing about women wearing make up...its just like a veil, because once that make up comes off its a different women...that make up is pretty much a mask that covers their face and all its ugly lil flaws

    • @The_Gump

That is the store's rule not the law of the land. In our country we have something called Civil Rights and this lady was denied hers by that gas station attendant. She is right and he/she was in the wrong no matter what your stance is about Muslims

    • @Blklight

I believe you are wrong. The owner has the right to refuse service to anyone. May not be smart to do, but I do believe he has that right.

    • @The_Gump Here around town.. You go to a bank drive through they ask you to remove your helmet, even if it's just a deposit..

      Posted Feb-2-2012 By

    • @Blklight

What about the right of the attendant not to feel threatened by someone entering the establishment. If you ever worked a C-store, you might understand the crazies that walk through the door!

If they are so stuck on their religion, why was she allowed to be in public without a male present? The old men should have paid for the gas, not his inferior daughter!

  • You have no "religious right" to wear a mask in to a private business if they don't allow it. Period. Now fuck off. And, she should have her license taken away for driving with a bag over her head.

  • Wow, this is just like that guy that was told to get out of a restarant because of the way he felt about homosexuality.
Private businesses can decide who they want for customers.

    • @dontknowzed

True but you can not discriminate based on skin color, religion, etc. I guess you are fine with businesses putting a sign stating "Whites only" since businesses can decide who they want to serve.

    • @MrG a burqa is none of those things. i read his comment. i didn't read where he said he was fine with whites only businesses. would you point that out to me?

why don't you try responding to his actual comments instead of making up comments to respond to.

    (2) if she is permitted to purchase gas dressed like that then people should be permitted to wear a ski mask when purchasing gas too
    (3) how will she be humiliated no one will recognize who the fuck she is

" if she is permitted to purchase gas dressed like that then people should be permitted to wear a ski mask when purchasing gas too"

There is no law that says you can't wear a ski mask to purchase gas. It's not practical to do it, but no one is going to arrest you for simply wearing a mask.

You're right, apparently in Floriduuh it's the law that you can't wear a mask in public. They passed this law because of the KU KLUX KLAN back in the 1950's. So unless this lady is in the KLAN I think she has a case.
