OAP dead in flat NINE years
Death riddle ... War veteran Benjamin Benit

A WAR veteran lay dead in his council flat for NINE YEARS, an inquest heard.
Benjamin Benit, 76, was found in an England replica football shirt from the
2002 World Cup — the last year he is known to have been alive.
His body had been mysteriously wrapped in a sheet and moved from the flat. It
was found dumped in undergrowth by a dog walker.
An unknown fraudster had been collecting Mr Benit’s pension since he died —
even after the body was dumped.
Police arrested a man who gave the same name as Mr Benit but he was released
The body was discovered in New Cross, South East London, in August 2011.
Forensic evidence proved he had been left there not long before, Southwark
Coroners’ Court was told.
His left hand was missing but was found when council workmen cleared out the
flat in New Cross.
Mr Benit was born in South London in 1925 and served in the RAF during World
He was a regular drinker in pubs around London’s Old Kent Road and New Cross
Road and often told friends he had played in goal for Millwall FC.
Coroner Tony Badenoch recorded an open verdict.
He said: “From all the available evidence, it follows that Benjamin Benit came
by his death in an unknown way in the year 2002.”
