Safe Mode: On
Beck and Palin Sponser Counter Rally at Martin Luther King Day at Lincoln Memorial

Reaching back to his Morning Zoo Radio days Beck wants to march on Washington on same day Black Americians honor MLK...O'Reilly wonders if Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin are trying to denigrate Dr. King in some way...Ya Think?...These are real serious people.

O'Reilly expresses concern that "there might be trouble" at Beck/Palin rally

Fox News personality Glenn Beck's intention to hold a rally at the Lincoln Memorial on the 47th anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream Speech" has aroused widespread criticism and has sparked plans for counter-rallies by Al Sharpton and others.

Fox News host Bill O'Reilly appears to be seriously concerned about potential racial conflict arising out of the protests, and he aired a segment with Beck on Thursday that seemed intended to diffuse the tension.

"Later this month, our pal Glenn Beck will hold a rally in Washington, DC on the same day that Al Sharpton is also holding a rally," O'Reilly began. "Now, that's causing some controversy."

"I want to read you our pal Ben Jealous," O'Reilly said to Beck, referring sarcastically to the president of the NAACP as Beck laughed. "You know our pal Ben? Big fans of both you and me? Oh, he loves us."

O'Reilly was apparently referring to Jealous's charge last month that he and the NAACP "were snookered by Fox News" into believing that Department of Agriculture employee Shirley Sherrod "had harmed white farmers because of racial bias."

The NAACP, which has recently been taking increasingly political stances, also passed a resolution last month condemning "explicitly racist behavior" in the Tea Party movement and calling on responsible members of the movement to "repudiate" these racist elements.

One Tea Party group quickly charged the NAACP with becoming overly politicized and suggested that the IRS should reconsider its tax-exempt status. Sarah Palin even described the resolution on her Facebook page as "traumatizing" -- though she also echoed its language in her recent Twitter call for "peaceful Muslims" to "refudiate" the "Ground Zero Mosque."

O'Reilly then quoted from remarks Jealous made in June, when he announced a "march for jobs" to be held in Washington on October 2 that will also serve as a follow-up to the August 28 protests against Beck.

"We will be fighting Glenn Beck on Aug. 28th and we will be using that to leverage the second march,” Jealous stated.

"They think that you're trying to denigrate Dr. King in some way," O'Reilly said of Jealous and Sharpton.

"May I ask a question?" Beck replied. "I mean this in all sincerity. Do white people own the legacy of Abraham Lincoln? Because I don't think they do. And I don't think black people own the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King."

Beck had used almost identical words on his own program back in June, saying, "Whites don't own Abraham Lincoln. Blacks don't own Martin Luther King,"

"I'm worried about that there might be trouble down there," O'Reilly suggested, but Beck shrugged it off, saying, "There's not going to be trouble."

O'Reilly initially appeared to accept the reassurance, commenting, "Beck is sincere when he says he doesn't want any trouble -- because you're actually banning any signs at your rally."

A minute later, however, O'Reilly returned to the topic, saying, "It is important for everyone to understand, including Ben Jealous, all right, that Beck, you've gone out of your way to say, 'Look, we don't want any incendiary signs. We don't want to make this political.'"

And he repeated again near the end of the segment, "They're going to make this -- 'they're' being Ben Jealous and this guy, the president of the National Urban League, Marc Morial -- they're going to make it racial."

Beck, however, insisted, "I want you to see that it is not a white-black thing. It's not. It's an American thing."

  • Actually it was Beck that set up the Aug. 28th rally first.

Although it is oxymoronic for the New Black Panther Party to celebrate MLK day. Don't cha think?

BTW. You DO NOT have to be BLACK to celebrate MLK day.

    Race card fail!

  • 1) Its NOT a political rally. They are adamant about NO ONE bringing signs etc its about honoring the military and spirit of bringing the people of the nation together. As a matter of fact Beck has kept what the rally is pretty quiet only revealing some of it to some of his staff. He has people working on bits and pieces no knowing what the final "act" is!
2)They didnt realize it was the same day as MLK speech until sometime after when someone pointed it out.
    3) For all the Beck basher More..

  • Didn't Rev Al Sharpton support the religious GZ mosque, but now Sharpton is trying to denounce and counter- protest Beck the right to rally, perhaps pray, at the Lincoln memorial? I'm no fan of Beck's, but the hypocricy is astounding.

  • "Blacks don't own MLK", well that is the most racist statement I have heard in a long while even for Liveleak.

Yes, Martin Luther King Jr. fought for equal rights for all Americans but listen to the speech.

In this speech, whose injustice is he speaking about specifically?

    • You are so wrong. Dr. King believed poverty was the main cause, not only poverty for African-Americans,
but poor whites, Hispanics and Asians. He was a practitioner of Satyagraha, Gandhi's principle of nonviolent persuasion. He also was an anti-war protester and was for peace, justice and civil rights for all. You might want to read his book Stride Toward Freedom and all his essays and sermons. He was for fighting against any oppressed people and his struggle and message is not excluded to just More..

    • Did you listen to the "I have a dream" speech? I know what Martin Luther King Jr.'s philosophy was but this 8/28 Glen Beck publicity stunt speaks directly to that speech which if you had listened to is about the inujustices and unkept promises on Negroes.

You are saying I am wrong even after I present the evidence to prove my statement which tells me that your opinion is based on a misguided perception that you refuse to stray from.

    • You are wrong to say it is a publicity stunt. You are wrong to to say that he/it is racist. The core of his speech was about the injustice of blacks agreed but not about the exclusion of whites.

"The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. • The message of Beck's rally has nothing to do with the message of the "I have a dream" speech. Beck is only interested in piggybacking his message on that day.

More importantly, Martin Luther King Jr. is seen as the greatest martyr in the struggle of Blacks to gain equal rights in our country. He gave his life to that cause. It comes off as disrespectful of his legacy to attempt to reduce his message and efforts to the petty efforts to further drive a wedge between conservatives More..
