Costa Mesa Councilman Claims Unions Tried To Set Him Up For DUI Investigation

COSTA MESA (CBSLA.com) — A Costa Mesa City councilman claims labor unions tried to set him up to be investigated for drunk driving.

Costa Mesa Mayor Pro Tem Jim Righeimer says someone called 911 and falsely reported he was driving recklessly. An officer was sent to Righeimer’s home to give him a sobriety test on his front porch, which turned out to be negative, KNX 1070’s Mike Landa reports.Righeimer believes the false report came from his opponents in the labor movement.

“I understand that pensions are a tense issue, I understand that pay is a tense issue, I understand that some people may disagree,” Righeimer said to reporters. “But when, it looks like someone is paid to follow me around town and then set me up for a DUI in front of my kids and my house, that’s crossing the line.”

Righeimer has proposed outsourcing public employee jobs to the private sector.

Police say an informant called 911 at about 6 p.m. Wednesday and followed a driver who was possibly drunk. The caller followed the driver, who was later identified as Righeimer, from a bar to his home in Mesa Verde and pointed out the house to a responding officer, according to the Daily Pilot.

At a news conference, Righeimer showed his receipt for two Diet Cokes totaling $6 from the bar.

Police are now investigating the call

  • Obviously this guy knows he is being targeted. Good on him for keeping his receipts and being prepared for this type of harassment.

  • Unsurprising. Union thugs are worse than the strikebreakers were.

Public employee jobs SHOULD be made private. Public employees are overpaid and lazy, for the most part. For every public worker there are a hundred people who would be glad to do their job for less money, and do it better.

  • That's so dirty, but not unheard of from these thugs. What were they thinking? There would be no way it would stick, anyway...was there a cop witnessing him driving? It could have been anybody driving him home sober.

The frightening part is that someone could call the cops and have them go to your home, then suddenly give you a sobriety test...whether or not you were driving? That's just crazy. What if you'd been home the whole time, enjoying a couple of beers during the game?

    Something's More..

  • I remember when public employees were not the elites in our state. One became a public employee as "...a trade off between security, and taking a risk towards becoming wealthy in the private sector..." Now it's turned around.

    • @nexus1961 Bad neighbors have benefit of TIME to wait for their close enemy to mess up.
THEN, they call the cops. Knowing their enemy will be caught. And they usually leave their names. So any relation will be linked to bad neighbor.

Unions.. arent so smart. Anonymous calls for something he didnt do. FAIL
