An Australian man kidnapped in the Southern Philippines has appeared in a video pleading for his life.

In the video, obtained by Fairfax newspapers, Warren Rodwell asks his family to help raise a $US2 million ransom.

The video shows Mr Rodwell, 53, begging Australia's ambassador to help secure his release.

Mr Rodwell, originally from Sydney, was abducted from his home in Mindanao by gunmen early last month.
