It has titanium skid plates on the end of the wings, so it can in fact drag a wing on landing. With one wing on the ground, the other in the air, they place those "training wheels" back on, then put weight on the other wing to place the second set of "training wheels."
They are very difficult to land, the chase car is the second set of eyes, that guides the plane until touchdown.

In the 90's, I used to fly out of NAS Moffet in Mountain View, CA. We would wait an interminable amount of time waiting for the ANG to fly in from some place to give us a lift to Yakima, NTC, Ft. Lewis, or Hawaii.

@Element The GTO is needed because the pilot cannot see the single file wheels on which it lands. The GTO has another U2 pilot on board giving the flying driver instructions on what adjustments are needed to set the plane down properly.

It was always awesome to see them land and take off... especially since there was a road right at the end of the run way... only thing that sucked was living in the barracks... since they're so slow you'd hear the loud rumbling of the engine for awhile before it landed

Beale AFB. Lived there. Nothing special except for these beauties! We could hear them take off from the other side of the base (approximately 4 miles away). They take off extremely steep! I used to sit at the end of the runway with my dad and watch them take off and land all day. Truly remarkable planes if you ask me. The capabilities of this plane from way back when are astonishing!

@Anthony J Buckley Bad ass? it's a recon plane don't know how that makes it bad ass i know it flies at the edge of space which is cool.I remember seeing James May from Top Gear go up in one of these and seeing ice form on the cockpit windows once they got up there oh and he had to wear a space suit too 1hr before take off and an hour after landing i wonder if that technically makes him an and the pilots astronauts?
