U.S. Ranks Second Worst in UNICEF Study of Child Relative Poverty in 35 Richer Nations

Based on the assessment of one leading international children’s
organization, the U.S. has one of the worst child-poverty rates among
wealthy nations.
Nearly a quarter (23.1%) of young Americans (17 and younger) are
living in relative poverty, according to UNICEF. Relative poverty is
defined as “living in a household in which disposable income, when
adjusted for family size and composition, is less than 50% of the
national median income.”
The rate is even higher for children living in single parent homes
(44.3%), in households of three or more kids (33.8%), with parents
possessing “low education” (58%) or who have “low work intensity” (72%).
Of the 35 nations studied, only Romania had a higher percentage of
children living in relative poverty. Iceland and Finland had the lowest
rates at 4.7% and 5.3%. Among the larger nations, Germany was measured
at 8.5%, France at 8.8%, the United Kingdom at 12.1%, Canada at 13.3%,
Japan at 14.9% and Italy at 15.9%.
There was one category in which the U.S. even ranked below Romania:
the child poverty gap, which measures the gap between the poverty line
and the median income of those below the poverty line.

Throwing $billions and billions at poverty for decades using wealth distribution, social engineering and social justice sure has worked wonders.
The war on poverty is about as successful and logical as the war on drugs or the war on terrorism.

I love reports like these because they reinforce what I've been saying since the eighties, SEAL THE DAMN BORDERS!! Poverty is on the rise because we've allowed 20 million third world cultured, degenerates into this Country.
Even the truth and reality in these reports isnt enough to wake people up. Denial is a powerfull thing.

If that is your attitude, then you should seal the border with Canada as well. I would be much more comfortable if my neighbour wasn't racist or bigotted. It's sad what state of denial you are in. It can't be born and bred Americans that have caused these economic woes, it must have been the immigrants. You are adorable in your ignorance.

@Toolguard Honestly I don't know who the majority is but both are HUGE contributing factors....there really is a multitude of reasons why they're in the situation they're in. I've lived in Brooklyn NYC for most of my life and being here I can tell you that the people living in poverty here are usually born into it BUT will not work hard enough or be have the discipline to be educated to get them out of it. BTW it's not racism to think that immigrants have been a huge piece of the pie and its jus More..

Immigrants make up a big part of that and we have an immigrant population of 40 million, and really I blame a lot of it on the people in poverty themselves, not all of course. You watch people from India and China come here and flourish in our system and have come from nothing, whereas you have natural born americans who are just too fucking lazy to get it together, we have so many social safety nets in place to help people get on their feet but many recipients look at it like entitlements than More..

Blacks and Mexicans are dragging the US' numbers down. It would be interesting to see a Whites-only poverty number -- I bet it would be quite similar to European results.

It probably would be, but America was built on the back of immigrants, and to be fair Europe has its fair share of ethnic poverty.

@tonkoo
If you only think in term of skin color, you will never understand how poverty operates in our world, and that's perfect for those who like to keep dominating the wealth because:
1- It diverts the attention from the real causes that are making a segment of the population poor and
2-It divides people and that makes them easy to conquer.
Every country has its poor people (low socio-economic group), even in places like Mexico, India and Timbuktu (not a country). So, it can't really be a More..

Relative poverty is not absolute poverty. Someone who lives in relative poverty still has their basic human needs met. Expecting the government to lift them beyond that is absurd. They aren't starving and they have clothes, clean water and a roof over their head. I've seen happy poor people and miserable rich people. The trick is to learn to be happy with what you have and work hard if you want more. The problem we have in the US is that fewer and fewer work hard but everyone wants more.

@dkast Really? Where's the improvement? I have yet to see it. Our deficit is still through the roof, unemployment is still extremely high, housing market is still in the tank and consumer confidence is in the shitter, the economy moved at 1.9% last quarter, energy prices have remained at all time highs which has raised the price of everything else. You'll get no argument about Bush from me, but all of those bastards in gov't are complicit in this and they were all making money hand over fist dur More..

and yet those in "poverty" somehow find the time and money to buy the new Iphone and any new pair of Jordan's that are released. I have zero sympathy for them as they truly have no clue what real poverty is. Just step out and take a look at a few third world countries.

You are referring to the areas where third world degenerates have illegally entered this Nation and brought their "Barrios" mentality with them. No worries though m8, there are very few things in this world that fire wont cure or sterilize.

Right.
Notice they used "relative poverty" instead of actual poverty?
Our poor would qualify as rich in most countries of the world.
Meaningless, stupid "assessment."

is child poverty an isolated thing...meaning, aren't the parents poor too. by calling it child poverty you imply that the children have the ability to make money, which they don't. It's just poverty, or selfish ass parents, you choose.

@MiKE0nE Well I've lived in uk and the USA and the great thing about the USA is there is no class system like the uk .anyone can make it here it's just being willing to put in the effort .it is similar in the uk but people will never accept you at the upper echelons of society if you don't talk like them or if you didn't go to the right schools .
