South Africa has over 50 murders a day, this exceeds the amount New Zealand has in 1 year.
When I was there the SAPD (During apartheid) advised do not stop at red lights (Slow down check its clear & haul ass) as this is a favourite point to car jack/kill you and if you hear an intruder in your house, shoot to kill and then fire a shot into the wall or floor and say that was your warning shot.
In the squatter camp Soweto blacks can buy an AK47 for a couple of hundred rand, so hanging about with a handgun is not advisable.
