The earthquake and the tsunami were the tragedy... The Fukushima reactor damage and the consequent leakage of some radioactive vapour is not a tragedy....
No one has died from it. No one will get sick from it and its contamination is minimal... much less and way less toxic than what was left after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which are thriving modern cities now, and nowhere near as much as Chernobyl... And the actual deaths attributed to Chernobyl is around 50.. mostly the firemen and workers d More..

Australia is, if your going to have reactors one of the safest places to build them (however japan and anywere along the pacific rim is a fucken stupid place to buid them on account of all the EARTHQUAKES!!)

relying on an old reactor designed by GE has costed us a lot. safety measures were ignored and now we pay the price. we have been in this position before after WWII...we will rise again

I would suggest you don't. Seeing as how quickly things can turn toxic and poison you all, I would search out any other power source.
Easier said then done I know, but the consequences of another 'mistake' would scare the crap out of me.

Didn't seem like a cohesive piece. Is it about the slow and difficult process of cleanup and rebuilding? Is it about Fukushima? Is it about lousy planning? I don't know, I guess everything, drop some dramatic music behind it and hope people start freaking out.

There is no ROI (return on investment) with nuclear power. It's a subsidized industry, the true cost is not past on to the customer, it's passed on to all tax payers. Even if there were zero accidents, the long term costs will last longer than any short term benefit. Discover Channel did a 4 episode series call "Submarine: Hidden Hunter". Episode 4 "End Of Red October" details the problem Russia is having with the reactors from the 200 submarines, that's right 200 of them. Th More..

radiation is scary to people because they don't understand it. YOu get more radiation exposure in a 4 hour plane flight than you would get living next to a nuclear power station for like 3 years.
Did you know that MRI originally used to be NMR, for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance? They had to change the name because the word "nuclear" terrified people.

And yet little disasters happen, just a little, and devastate 100 km around plant for next 200 years and thousands of people die.
What would happen if actual nuclear plant explodes?
It just isn't safe and human greed will destroy us.

You are correct. When I was standing 100m from Chernobyl's No. 4 reactor, I had the same reading on my Geiger counter as when flying 30,000 feet in the air. People have no clue how much radiation they are exposed to when flying. Being a career pilot is no doubt a hazardous job!

Good old Tepco. This is way...WAAAY worse than Chernobyl. At least there they managed to cover the thing in a concrete sarcophagus. Here, 3 reactors have melted down, with NOTHING above them. They're bubbling away as we speak, spewing millions of becquerels of activity into the air a day. That doesn't count all the shit-up water they're pumping into the north pacific every day. Yet no one in the west is bothered. because our media are complicit in the cover up to a degree that could bring a grow More..

@Fifteen Foot Kitten its the cover up tactic as it ever was. I germany we had the GKSS-"incident", uranium pellets were found all around that power plant and they still admit that there was no meltdown, further no qualified laboratory wants to do a study because they wouldnt get further contracts by nuclear industry whilst people are dying trough leukemia

You're wrong.
1) Unit 1 got a cover, finished in Nov. 2011.
2) Unit will get cover, they're working on it at the moment.
3) The released radioactive material is just a sixth of that from Chernobyl.
4) A lot of the radioactive materials were driven to the Pacific and are thinned.

When you're talking about people dying of leukemia you're talking about the KiKK-study? Then you should know that it isn't based on reliable facts, the cluster ("Elbmarsch-cluster") can't be directed to the NPS Krümmel or the GKSS.

@TN-112 i know, there are too few reliable facts on both sides.
nobody ever trew in a plausible reason for that pac-balls (i know, not verified but uranium doesnt just "appear") that were found, they are just ignored and you can find them by yourself, not even a microscope is needed.

The Japanese government is laying the bullshit on pretty thick here.
Fukushima is shaping up to be every bit as bad as Chernobyl and perhaps even worse.
Maybe exponentially worse.
What the world needs to understand is that Fukushima is not simply a place, it is on the sea unlike Chernobyl. Therefore Fukushima must be regarded as a point of origin and not merely a confined disaster site.
Already abnormally high radiation levels are being seen on the west coasts of America and Canada, likely t More..

Yes they are. Tragedy has a way of humbling the hardest of people though. One thing I noticed was that as a whole, Japan pulled together to help their elderly people and those who were helpless as water raged in grabbing at their heels. Many people gave no thought for their own safety and rushed to help their seniors and crippled. Not a very visible scene in most other parts of world.
